Parque Ornitológico de Arrocampo, Saucedilla. Arrocampo Ornithological Park, Saucedilla.

Hola una vez más.
Hi again.

In the following link you can see our next national and foreign Birds and Mammals photographic and observation trips. I hope you like them and I encourage you to come with me. An experience that you will not forget.

On this occasion I am going to show you some Birds we have seen in a visit to the Ornithological Park of Arrocampo managed by the Saucedilla Town Hall.

This year there are  a lot of Great Bitterns sightingsat Arrocampo and we went there to see if we were lucky and we could see and photograph them. Anyway it is a place that I like a lot because of the great variety of birds that can be seen in it.

Despite this we did not have any luck observing the Great Bittern but the rest of the Birds we saw were worth the visit.

First thing we did was go to the Office of the Park to pick up the keys of the observatories and say hello, in this case, to my good friend Malu Martínez whom I have known since the Park opened. After the greetings and comments on how the Park was and where Birds were showing up we went to them.

I always say it but it is to be appreciated the good conditions in which the City Council of Saucedilla, and therefore the people who hire, maintains the facilities and the good treatment of the people in the Park office. Thank you very much for your work.

The day was not very good because even though the sun was shining it blew a lot of wind. I imagine you already know that strong wind and birdwatching do not get along very well.

The Bird of the day that I liked most was this Great White Egret because in addition to passing very close is very beautiful and has a very slow and elegant flight.

There was a spectacular migration of Sand Martin.

But due to the direction of the wind that make the Birds look at wrong place and also the strog wind increase their speed a lot, I could not get a good photo.

Tendrá que ser otro día.
It will have to be another day.

Espátula común (Platalea leucorodia).
Eurasian Spoonbill.

Garceta común (Egretta garzetta).
Little Egret.

House Sparrows were very busy building their nests on one of the observatories roofs.

But the one that was really working was the female who was already putting the finishing touches to her nest.

It is a pity the decline that this beautiful species is suffering.

A very good surprise was being able to watch this trio of Garganeys.

Había dos macho y una hembra.
There were two males and a female.

Son unas aves preciosas.
They are beautiful Birds.

A male Eurasian Marsh Harrier. What you see in the background of him are not clouds it is smoke. Then we could see that the bushes surrounding the observatory 6 had been burned, which, thank God, did not burn it.

Y esta otra una hembra.
And this one is a female.

When they flew over where Garganey were they flew away.

Cattle egrets were already very beautiful.

También quedaban algunos cormoranes grandes (Phalacrocorax carbo).
There were also some Great Cormorants.

We saw a flock of Glossy Ibis.

It is a pity that light was not very good where they passed.

Another shot of the Great White Egret with which this story began.

At noon we went to see if the Lesser Kestrels had already arrived. When we arrived there was none and I entertained myself with the Eurasian Jackdaws.

They are not as black as people think.

And soon after we saw the first specimens of Lesser Kestrel. The first photos are of males.

Also in this case the strong wind made it difficult to take photographs.

I increased the speed of the shots a bit because in good light the ISOs were not very high. The parameters of this photograph are: F8.0, 1 / 1,600 and ISO 800. I always try to shoot with them as low as possible so that the photo does not have much noise.

Although being bigger, I can not complain about the result.

I'm sorry to up load so many but after selecting the ones I liked the most I did not know which one to remove and finally I decided to upload the selected at first.

Las hembras estuvieron menos colaboradoras.
Females were less cooperative.

To this I managed to get the enlightened eye.

There were many Barn Swallows but the wind prevented me from taking a better picture for you.

As it was necessary to spend some time until the last hour of the afternoon, which is when it is most likely to show up the elusive Great Bittern, we continued with the trip to see what we could watch. In this photo a male Common Teal.

And in this other one a female of the previous species.

Una pareja de cigüeñuelas comunes (Himantopus himantopus). El macho es el de la izquierda.
A pair of Black-winged Stilt. The male is the one on the left.

Andarríos grande (Tringa ochropus).
Green Sandpiper.

Andarrios chico (Actitis hypoleucos).
Common Sandpiper.

Agachadiza común (Gallinago gallinago).
Common Snipe.

This male Sardinian Warbler was defending his territory singing very loud.

A shy male European Goldfinch.

However female was much more tame.

Otro tímido. Un macho de gorrión moruno (Passer hispaniolensis).
Another shy. A male Spanish Sparrow.

Cogujada común (Galerida cristata).
Crested Lark.

It's nice to see how tame the Corn Bunting become during breeding season.

They have no qualms about starting to sing very close to you.

Sometimes it seems that they are going to dislodge his peak.

Una bonita garza real (Ardea cinerea).
A beautiful Grey Heron.

I loved seeing this White Stork walking through this colorful field.

Vimos varios alcaudones reales meridionales (Lanius meridionalis).
We saw several Southern Grey Shrike.

And this was the one that was closest.

Quien sabe.
We saw several Great Spotted Cuckoos or the same in different places. Who knows.

What is certain is that they were chased by Common Magpies. In one of the occasions up to six went after him trying to throw him out of their territory to prevent their nests from being parasitized.

About 5 pm. we set out to make the unsuccessful wait for the Great Bitterns. Wait was very pleasant and entertaining in part thanks to this flock of Northern Shovelers that passed us several times over head.

In addition we could see that in one of the occasions that passed the flock of Northern Showeler there were two pairs of other infiltrated Ducks. In case you do not see them I'll put other photos too cut out so you can recognize them. In the center of the image there is a pair of Northern Pintail and on the down right, another one of Garganey.

La pareja de cercetas carretonas (Anas querquedula).
The pair of Garganey.

And this one looks great Northern Pintail. From left to right the male is in second place and the female in last place.

Preciosas aves.
Beautiful Birds.

In the distance a Squacco Heron.

Vimos bastantes garzas imperiales (Ardea purpureapero ninguna quiso estar cerca de nosotros.
We saw several Purple Heron but none wanted to be near us.

Where the Great Bitterns had to sho up came this Purple Swamp-hen which is not bad either.

And with this wonderful Moon we decided to end the day and return to Madrid.

Hasta pronto.
See you soon.

  1. Preciosas fotos.
