Miércoles 22 de noviembre: De Tendaba a Georgetown, Kuntaur y paseo en barco por el Parque Nacional
del rio Gambia
Wednesday, November 22: From Tendaba to Georgetown, Kuntaur and boat ride through the Gambia River National Park
Este día fuimos hasta Georgetown haciendo paradas por el camino para ver y fotografiar las aves que pudimos encontrar.
This day we went to Georgetown making stops along the way to see and photograph the Birds we could spot.
Gavilán Chikra (Accipiter badius).
Shikra.
Cerca de Tendaba visitamos un dormidero de pelícanos rosados (Pelecanus rufescens).
Near Tendaba we visited a Pink-backed Pelican roost.
Carraca coroniparda (Coracias naevius).
Rufous-crowned Roller.
Culebrera sombría (Circaetus cinereus) y un grupo de estorninos colilargos (Lamprotornis caudatus).
Brown Snake-Eagle and a flock of Long-tailed Glossy-Starling.
El mismo ejemplar de la foto anterior que era acosado por un cuervo pío (Corvus albus) que intentaba quitarle la presa que lleva en sus garras.
The same specimen in the previous photo that was harassed by a Pied Crow that was trying to take away the prey it was carrying in its claws.
Un grupo de tántalos africanos (Mycteria ibis). Los únicos que vimos en todo el viaje.
A group of Yellow-billed Stork. The only ones we saw on the entire trip.
Paramos en un área en donde íbamos en busca de aves esteparias.
We stopped in an area where we were looking for steppe Birds.
Lo primero que vimos fue a este cuco cariblanco (Cuculus gularis).
The first thing we saw was this African Cuckoo.
Una pareja de azor lagartijero oscuro (Melierax metabates).
A pair of Dark Chanting-Goshawk.
Y de las aves que íbamos buscando vimos a las avefrías coletudas (Vanellus tectus) y dos corredores etiópicos (Cursorius temminckii) que no pude fotografiar.
And of the birds we were looking for, we saw Black-headed Lapwing and two Temminck's Courser that I couldn't photograph.
Paramos en una pequeña charca que había muchas aves. En la foto escribanos gorjigrís (Emberiza goslingi).
We stopped at a small pond where there were many Birds. In the photo Gosling's Bunting.
Aunque había bastantes especies de aves, la más abundante eran los quelea común (Quelea quelea).
Although there were quite a few species of Birds, the most abundant were the Red-billed Quelea.

Los machos con su distintivo color negro en cara y pecho.

Y las hembras que son menos llamativas.
And females that are less striking.

Había mucho cacahuete sembrado y estaban recogiéndolos después de la estación de las lluvias. Un vídeo de como los limpian.
There was a lot of peanuts planted and they were harvesting them after the rainy season. A video of how they clean them.
Después fuimos a un encharcamiento bastante grande al lado de la carretera en busca de los pluviales (Pluvianus aegyptius). En la foto un alcaraván senegalés (Burhinus senegalensis).
Afterwards we went to a fairly large pond on the side of the road in search of Crocodile-bird. In the photo a Senegal Thick-knee.

Y tuvimos mucha suerte de poder fotografiar a los pluviales (Pluvianus aegyptius).
And we were very lucky to be able to photograph the Crocodile-bird.
Para mi era un bimbo aunque ya los había visto en zoos pero no es lo mismo.
For me he was a bimbo although I had already seen them in zoos but it is not the same.
Continuamos nuestro recorrido para llegar a Kuntaur. Antes de llegar divisamos este marabú africano (Leptoptilos crumenifer).
We continue our journey to reach Kuntaur. Before arriving we spotted this Marabou Stork.
Ya en el paseo en barca por el parque nacional del río Gambia, vimos a este martín pescador malaquita (Corythornis cristatus).
Already on the boat ride through the Gambia River National Park, we saw this Malachite Kingfisher.
Vimos un grupo de colobos rojos occidentales (Piliocolobus badius).
We saw a group of Western Red Colobus.

Vimos varios hipopótamos pero metidos entre la vegetación de la orilla. Aunque estuvimos un buen rato donde debían salir los chimpancés a comer, no hubo suerte y no vimos ninguno en este viaje.
We saw several Hippos but hidden among the vegetation on the shore. Although we spent a long time where Chimpanzees were supposed to come out to eat, there was no luck and we didn't see any on this trip.

Un grupo de suirirí cariblanco (Dendrocygna viduata).
A flock of White-faced Whistling-Duck.
Buitre palmero (Gypohierax angolensis). Esta especie es principalmente frugívora, nada común ente las aves de presa.
Palm Vulture. This species is mainly frugivorous, not common among birds of prey.
Ganso espolonado (Plectropterus gambensis). Fijaos que bien se le ven los espolones que tiene en las alas en esta foto.
Spur-winged Goose. Notice how well the spurs on his wings are visible in this photo.

Jueves 23 de noviembre: Georgetown, paseo en barco por el río Gambia, Cantera de Bansang, parque forestal Kunkilling.
Thursday 23 November: Georgetown, Gambia River Boat Ride, Bansang Quarry, Kunkilling Forest Park.
Antes de tomar el barco, nos dimos un paseo por los alrededores del hotel. En la foto un estornino colibronceado (Lamprotornis chalcurus).
Before taking the boat, we took a walk around the hotel. In the photo a Bronze-tailed Glossy-Starling.

Vimos tres avesol africano (Podica senegalensis) pero era casi imposible tomarles una foto. Estaban mu escondidos en la vegetación ribereña.
We saw three African Finfoot but it was almost impossible to take a photo of them. They were hidden in the riverside vegetation.
Avefría senegalesa (Vanellus senegallus). Se le pueden ver los espolones que estas aves tienen en las alas.
Wattled Lapwing. You can see the spurs that these birds have on their wings.
Y con este Alción pechiazul (Halcyon malimbica) dimos por finalizado el paseo en barco.
And with this Blue-breasted Kingfisher We finished the boat ride..
Después fuimos hasta la cantera de Bansang. Fue muy grato comprobar que donde antes había un basurero, ahora lo habían limpiado y tenia en el fondo unas pequeñas charcas a las que iban bastantes aves a beber.
Then we went to the Bansang Quarry. It was very pleasant to see that where there used to be a garbage dump, it had now been cleaned and had some small ponds at the bottom where many Birds went to drink.

Y esta fue la última ave que fotografié este día, un Cucal senegalés (Centropus senegalensis).
And this was the last bird I photographed this day, a Senegal Coucal.
Acabamos este día en el parque forestal Kunkilling en donde pudimos ver algunas gangas morunas (Pterocles exustus) y las más abundantees gangas cuadricinta (Pterocles quadricinctus) pero como era muy tarde y había muy poca luz, no saque ninguna foto.
We ended this day in the Kunkilling Forest Park where we were able to see a few Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse and the more abundant Four-banded Sandgrouse but as it was very late and there was very little light, I did not take any photos.
Al llegar la hotel, la puesta de sol era impresionante.
Upon arrival at the hotel, sunset was stunning.
Viernes 24 de noviembre: De Georgetown a Bijilo.
Friday, November 24: From Georgetown to Bijilo.
En este día hicimos varias paradas por el camino para ver algunas especies de aves que aun no habíamos visto hasta ese día y que luego os mostraré. En este día hice dos bimbos.
On this day we made several stops along the way to see some species of Birds that we had not yet seen until that day and that I will show you later. On this day I made two bimbos.
Desde el propio hotel saqué a este turaco gris occidental (Crinifer piscator).
From the hotel I took this Western Grey Plantain-eater.
Luego volvimos a visitar el Parque forestal Kunkilling. En la foto un lorito senegalés (Poicephalus senegalus).
We then visited again Kunkilling Forest Park. In the photo a Senegal Parrot.
Un macho de viuda senegalesa (Vidua chalybeata).

Luego hicimos otra parada en donde pudimos ver una colonia de cría de marabú africano (Leptoptilos crumenifer).
Then we made another stop where we could see a breeding colony of Marabou Stork.
Un poco más tarde volvimos a detenernos y pudimos observar tres ejemplares de búhos lechosos (Bubo lacteus).
A little later we stopped again and were able to observe three specimens of Verreaux's Eagle-Owl.
Un momento cuando estábamos viendo y fotografiando a los búhos acompañados por alguna gente local.
A moment when we were watching and photographing the owls accompanied by some local people.
Nuestro siguiente punto de parada fue unos campos de arroz. En la foto una avefría espinosa (Vanellus spinosus).
Our next stopping point was some rice fields. In the photo a Spur-winged Lapwing.

Cernícalo pizarroso (Falco ardosiaceus).
Grey Kestrel.
Y garcilla cangrejera (Ardeola ralloides). En este arrozal tmbien pude ver dos especies nuevas para mí aunque no conseguí fotografiar, la estrilda codorniz (Ortygospiza atricollis) y al alcotán cuellirrojo (Falco chicquera).
And Squacco Heron. In this rice field I was also able to see two new species for me although I did not manage to photograph them, Black-faced Quailfinch and Red-necked Falcon.
Nuevamente en la carretera hacia el siguiente punto de observación, vimos que un camaleón senegalés (Chamaeleo senegalensis) estaba cruzando la carretera. Nos detuvimos y le pusimos en una valla para evitar que lo atropellasen.
Again on the road towards the next observation point, we saw that a Senegal Chameleon was crossing the road. We stopped and put him in a wall to prevent him from being run over.
Ya en nuestro destino, pudimos ver varios alcaravanes de El Cabo (Burhinus capensis). Todos muy escondidos entre la vegetación. Es un nuevo bimbo para mí.
Already at our destination, we were able to see several Spotted Thick-knee. All very hidden among the vegetation. He's a new bimbo for me.

Otro bimbo para mi, fue ver esta pareja de gansitos africanos (Nettapus auritus) en otro lagunazo que paramos. Fue una pena que estuviesen tan lejos para poder apreciar la belleza de esta especie.
Another bimbo for me was seeing this pair of African Pygmy-goose in another lagoon that we stopped. It was a shame that they were so far away to appreciate the beauty of this species.
En esta otra foto se les puede ver mejor. El macho, más colorido, es el de la derecha.
In this other photo you can see them better. The male, more colorful, is the one on the right.
Y antes de llegar al hotel en Bijilo, hicimos una breve parada en un observatorio bebedero. En la foto un macho de azulito carirrojo (Uraeginthus bengalus).
And before arriving at the hotel in Bijilo, we made a brief stop at a drinking observatory. In the photo a male Red-cheeked Cordonbleu.

El hotel en Bijilo donde estuvimos varias noches. Cuatro al comienzo del viaje y una al final.

Saturday, November 25: Kotu, Brufut Forest and Bijilo Monkey Park.
El último día de estancia en Gambia, fuimos por la mañana a la zona de Kotu. En la foto un zarapito trinador (Numenius phaeopus).
On the last day of our stay in Gambia, we went to the Kotu area in the morning. In the photo a Whimbrel.

We took a walk around the area.
Había muchos milanos negros (Milvus migrans).

Vimos bastantes mariposas pero eran difíciles de fotografiar pues no paraban mucho tiempo en el mismo sitio. En la foto una mariposa acraea (Acraea horta).
We saw quite a few butterflies but they were difficult to photograph because they did not stay in the same place for long. In the photo a Garden Acraea.
Después nos trasladamos hasta un bebedero en el bosque de Brufut. Allí nos llevaron a ver una pareja de chotacabras rabudo (Caprimulgus climacurus). Aun diciéndote donde estaba, costaba mucho verlos debido a su mimetismo.
Then we moved to a watering hole in the Brufut Forest. There they took us to see a pair of Long-tailed Nightjar. Even if they told you where it was, it was very difficult to see them due to their mimicry.

En el sitio donde comimos había bastantes lantanas en flor y había algunas mariposas.
At the place where we had lunch there were quite a few lantanas in bloom and there were some Butterflies.
Por la tarde el grupo se dividió pues alguno querían visitar el centro de Bijilo y otros nos fuimos andando hasta el cercano Bijilo Monkey Park.
In the afternoon the group split up as some wanted to visit the center of Bijilo and others walked to the nearby Bijilo Monkey Park.
A la entrada del parque estaba esta confiada tórtola senegalesa (Streptopelia senegalensis).
At the entrance to the park was this tame Laughing Dove.
Vimos dos grupos de colobos rojos occidentales (Piliocolobus badius).
We saw two groups of Western Red Colobus.
Y los más abundantes cercopitecos verdes (Chlorocebus pygerythrus).
And more abundant were the Vervet Monkey.
Había muchas telas de araña.
There were many spider webs.
Y ya a la salida del parque pudimos ver una pareja de las llamativas carracas blanquiazul (Coracias cyanogaster).
And already at the exit of the park we were able to see a pair of the striking Blue-bellied Roller.
