En esta ocasión os muestro lo que pude fotografiar en el viaje programado que hice a Arrocampo el 25 de marzo.

On this occasion I show you what I was able to photograph on the scheduled trip that I made to Villafáfila on March 25. 

El tiempo fue muy bueno y algo calurosa para esta época del año.

The weather was very good and somewhat hot for this time of year.

Después de recoger las llaves de los observatorios en el bar de la piscina municipal, nos fuimos hasta el primer observatorio. Lo primero que vimos fue a unos cuantos buitres leonados (Gyps fulvus) que pasaron por encima nuestro.

As soon as we collectied the keys of the observatories at the municipal pool Bar, we went to the first observatory. The first thing we saw was a few Griffon Vultures that flew over us.

Hay que ver lo grandes que son cuando vuelan cerca tuyo. No en vano llegan a tener una envergadura de 265 cm lo que les convierte en la tercera ave rapaz más grande de Europa. Después viene el quebrantahuesos con una distancia alar de 275 cm, y gana el buitre negro con sus 285 cm.

You realize how big they are when they fly close to you. Not in vain do they have a wingspan of 265 cm, which makes them the third largest Bird of Prey in Europe. Next comes the Bearded Vulture with a wing span of 275 cm, and the fist one is the Black Vulture measuring 285 cm.

Había un grupo de martinetes comunes (Nycticorax nycticorax). En la foto se ven tres adultos y un subadulto. Este último mas difícil de ver al tener un color menos llamativo  estar delante de la chimenea del edificio que se ve en el centro derecha de la imagen.

There was a group of  Black-crowned Night Heron. In the photo you can see three adults and a subadult. The latter is more difficult to see as it has a less conspicuous color and it was in front of the chimney of the building that can be seen in the center right of the photo.

Un bonito calamón común (Porphyrio porphyrio) se subió por encima de las eneas y nos permitió observarle muy bien.

A beautiful Purple Swamphen climbed above the cattails and allowed us to observe it very well.

También pasaron cerca nuestro algunos buitres negros (Aegypius monachus). Como os decía antes, es la mayor ave rapaz de Europa.

Some Cinereous Vultures also passed close to us. As I told you before, it is the largest Bird of Prey in Europe.

Tremendos.

Tremendous.

Pasaron dos águilas calzadas (Aquila pennata) morfo claro. Eran las primeras que veíamos este año los que íbamos en la excursión.

Two pale morfh Booted Eagles passed by. They were the first we saw this year.

También alzo el vuelo un aguilucho lagunero occidental (Circus aeruginosus).

A Western Marsh Harrier also took off.

Un bonito herrerillo común (Cyanistes caeruleus) buscaba insectos en los frutos de las eneas.

A beautiful Blue Tit was looking for insects in the fruits of the cattails.

A esta garcilla cangrejera (Ardeola ralloides) no la hubiésemos visto si no hubiese llegado volando pues se posó en un lugar difícil de ver.

We would not have seen this Squacco Heron if it hadn't come flying because it landed in a place that was difficult to spot.

Vimos varias tarabillas europeas (Saxicola rubicola). En la foto un macho.

We saw several Stonechat. In the photo a male.

Ya habían llegado las garzas imperiales (Ardea purpurea). También eran las primeras de este año.

Purple heron had already arrived. They were also the first seen of this year.

Son muy bonitas.

They are very pretty.

Me llamó la atención este lirio silvestre.

This wild Lily caught my eye.

Me sorprendió ver que los cormoranes grandes (Phalacrocorax carbo) habían hecho una colonia de cría en dos de las torres de alta tensión que cruzan el embalse.

I was surprised to see that Great Cormorants had made a breeding colony on two of the pylons that cross the reservoir.

Garceta grande (Egretta alba).

Great White Egret.

Las primeras amapolas que veíamos este año. Es una pena que cada vez se vean menos en los campos y cunetas debido a los herbicidas que se utilizan. 

The first Poppies we saw this year. It is a pity that they are seen less and less in the fields and ditches due to the herbicides that are used.

Garcilla cangrejera (Ardeola ralloides).

Squacco Heron.

Una garza imperial (Ardea purpurea) en la parte superior izquierda y en la inferior derecha dos cormoranes grandes (Phalacrocorax carbo). Un adulto a la izquierda y un subadulto a la derecha.

Al paso de un milano negro (Milvus migrans), se pusieron a volar bastantes garcillas bueyeras en una parte alejada del embalse.

When a Black Kite passes by, many Cattle Egrets started to fly in a remote part of the reservoir.

Después del almuerzo, fuimos a ver si habían llegado ya los cernícalos primillas (Falco naumanni). Se veían sobre todo machos aunque también vimos un par de hembras que por ir muy altas no fotografié.

After lunch, we went to see if the Lesser Kestrels (Falco naumanni) had arrived yet. They were mostly males, although we also saw a couple of females that I didn't photograph because they were too high.

Me hace gracias comprobar, cuando las aves que van volando, como despejan la cloaca de plumas antes de defecar para no manchárselas.

I find it funny to check, when Birds that are flying, how they open the feathers that surround the cloaca before defecating so as not to stain them.

Es impresionante la labor que se ha realizado en esta iglesia para la conservación del cernícalo primilla (Falco naumanni). Se han hecho muchos nidos en las fachadas.

The work that has been carried out in this Church for the conservation of the Lesser Kestrel is awesome. Many nests have been made on its facades.

Por mitad del pueblo pasó volando una garza real (Ardea cinerea).

In the middle of the town a Gray Heron  flew by.

Lo menos positivo de la conservación del cernícalo primilla (Falco naumanni) es la colonia creciente que hay en la iglesia de las grajillas occidentales (Corvus monedula).

The least positive about the conservation of the Lesser Kestrel is the growing colony in the Church of Eurasian Jackdaw.

Después, visitamos varios lagunazos cercanos al embalse. En la foto un calamón común (Porphyrio porphyrio).

Later, we visit several lagoons near the reservoir. In the photo a Purple Gallinule.

La verdad es que me sorprendió ver que casi no había patos en ellas. En la foto un morito común (Plegadis falcinellus) subadulto.

The truth is that I was surprised to see that there were almost no ducks in them. In the photo, a subadult Glossy Ibis.

Una garza real (Ardea cinerea).

A Grey Heron.

El año pasado, por estas mismas épocas, había una pareja de gansos del Nilo (Alopochen aegyptiaca) y este año 5 ejemplares. 

Last year, around thise same time, there was a pair of Egyptian Goose and this year 5 specimens.

En el centro de la imagen un galápago leproso.

In the center of the image a Freshwater Turtle.

Había una zona con muchas orquídeas avispa (Ophrys tenthredinifera). Que bonitas son.

There was an area with many Sawfly Orchids. They are beautiful.

Vimos varios alcaudones comunes (Lanius senator).

We saw several Woodchat Shrike.

Una espátula común (Platalea leucorodia) adulta y en plumaje nupcial.

Garceta grande (Egretta alba).

Great White Egret.

Tuve que buscar bastante tiempo a los elanios comunes (Elanus caeruleus). Al final de la tarde encontramos una pareja en el mismo lugar que los había encontrado en año pasado pero como era muy tarde no saqué fotos y estas son del año pasado.

I had to search for a long time for Black-shouldered Kite. At the end of the afternoon we found a couple in the same place that I had found them last year but since it was very late I didn't take photos and these are from last year.

El cortejo de la Avutarda Euroasiática en Villafáfila. Courtship of Great Bustard at Villafáfila.

En esta ocasión os muestro lo que pude fotografiar en el viaje programado que hice a Villafáfila el 11 de marzo para ver el cortejo de la avutarda euroasiática (Otis tarda).

On this occasion I show you what I was able to photograph on the scheduled trip that I made to Villafáfila on March 11 to see the display of the Great Bustard.

El tiempo fue bastante malo pues aunque no llovió, estuvo muy nublado e hizo un viento terrible, más de 30 km/hora, lo que no facilito la observación de las aves. Las avutardas estaban muy intranquilas y no dudaban en ponerse a volar a la menor oportunidad.

The weather was quite bad because although it did not rain, it was very cloudy and there was a terrible wind, more than 30 km/hour, which did not facilitate bird watching. Bustards were very restless and did not hesitate to fly at the slightest opportunity.

A lo largo del día pudimos observar muchas avutardas euroasiáticas (Otis tarda).

Throughout the day we were able to observe many Great Bustards.

Y como os decía al principio, muy asustadizas aunque luego, cuando alzaban el vuelo, pasaban cerca de donde estábamos.

And as I told you at the beginning, very scary, although later when they took off, they passed close to where we were.

Un numeroso grupo y eso que en la foto no me cogieron todas las que había.

A large flock and that in the photo I did not get all the ones that were there.

Varios impresionantes machos adultos pasaron cerca nuestro.

Several awesome adult males passed close to us.

Siempre me impresiona ver como vuelan estas pesadas aves.

It always impresses me to see how these heavy Birds fly.

Los machos adultos pueden llegar a pesar 18 kg lo que la convierte en una de las aves voladoras más pesadas del mundo. 

Adult males can weigh 18 kg, making it one of the heaviest flying birds in the world.

Aunque se las considera sedentarias, se desplazan desde las zonas de cría, a las de verano y luego a las de invierno a bastante distancia unas de otras. En este sentido, las hembras, de menor tamaño y peso, son las que mas se desplazan.

Although they are considered sedentary, they move from the breeding areas, to the summer areas, and then to the winter areas, quite a distance from each other. In this sense, females, smaller in size and weight, are the ones that move the most.

En la España peninsular, tenemos la gran suerte de albergar el 50% de la población mundial de esta especie.

In mainland Spain we are very lucky to host 50% of the world population of this species.

Villafáfila cuenta con la mayor densidad de avutardas del mundo.

Villafáfila has the highest density of Grat Bustards in the world.

Otro gran macho adulto.

Fijaos que bien se le pueden ver los barbones, unas unas largas plumas apuntadas, rígidas y eréctiles, que parten de la mandíbula inferior y que los machos poseen en plumaje nupcial.

Notice how well you can see the barbels, some long pointed feathers, rigid and erectile, that start from the lower jaw and that males have in breeding plumage.

Este fue el mayor grupo que vimos.

This was the largest flock we saw.

Un macho inmaduro.

Hacia el medio día, nos fuimos a ver como andaban las lagunas. He intentado mostraros primero las especias que pudimos ver para que luego, si queréis, las distingáis de las fotos en las que se ven muchos individuos juntos. En esta foto ánades rabudos (Anas acuta). Tenían bastante agua.

Around noon, we went to see how the lagoons were doing. I have tried to show you first the spices that we could see so that later, if you want, you can distinguish them from the photos in which many specimens are seen together. In this photo Northern Pintail. They had plenty of water.

Silbones europeos (Anas penelope).

Eurasian Wigeon.

Cerceta común (Anas crecca).

Common Teal.

Había muchos ejemplares.

There were many specimens.

Después del almuerzo volvimos a la zona donde las avutardas euroasiáticas (Otis tarda) para ver si podíamos ver alguna rueda al atardecer. El tiempo había mejorado en cuanto a que había menos nubosidad pero el viento no había amainado.

After lunch we went back to the area where Great Bustards to see if we could to see any display at sunset. The weather had improved in that there was less cloudiness but the wind hadn't let up.

Y allí estaban.

And there they were.

Al final, pudimos disfrutar viendo algunas ruedas. Fijaos en el punto blanco del centro. Con el telescopio terrestre se veían muy bien.

In the end, we were able to enjoy seeing some displays. Look at the white dot in the center. With the terrestrial telescope they were seen very well.
