Pajareando por Santoña y Bahía de Santander. Birding Santona and Santander Bay.

En esta ocasión os muestro lo que pude fotografiar en el viaje programado a Santoña y bahía de Santander a finales del mes de febrero.

On this occasion I show you what I was able to photograph on the scheduled trip to Santoña and Santander Bay at the end of February.

El primer día amenazaba lluvia y casi no saqué la máquina de fotos de la furgoneta por eso hice pocas fotos en la Bahía de Santander aunque vimos muchas aves.

The first day it was threatening to rain and I hardly took the camera out of the van, so I took few photos in Santander Bay, although we did see many Birds.

Acudimos directamente a Santander pues las mareas eran mejores para esas horas que íbamos a estar.

We went directly to Santander because the tides were better for those hours that we were going to be.

Al día siguiente hicimos Santoña y como las previsiones decían que no iba a llover saque más fotos.

The next day we did Santoña and since the forecasts said that it was not going to rain, I took more photos.

Bahía de Santander:
Santander Bay:

Vimos varias espátulas comunes (Platalea leucorodia).

We saw several Eurasian Spoonbill.

Este arao común (Uria aalge) estaba pescando muy cerca de donde estábamos. Esta foto es de uno de los clientes que asistió a la excursión pues mi máquina de fotos estaba en la furgoneta.

This Common Guillemot was fishing very close to where we were. This photo is from one of the clients who attended the excursion since my camera was in the van.

Visitamos las marismas blancas y las negras. En la foto un macho de ánade rabudo (Anas acuta).

We visited the White and Black Marshes. In the photo a male Pintail.

Un macho y dos hembras.

A male and two females.

Esta garza real (Ardea cinerea) estaba de pesca.

This Gray Heron was fishing.

Acabó pescando una anguila que se debatía por o ser ingerida.

It ended up catching an Eel that was struggling not to be eaten.

Al final, después de propinarle muchos golpes, consiguió tragársela y acudió al agua para limpiarse el pico y beber.

In the end, after giving it many blows, it managed to swallow it and went to water to clean its beak and drink.

Una pareja de cercetas comunes (Anas crecca). El macho es el que está a la izquierda.

A Common Teal pair. The male is the one on the left.

Vimos más gaviotas cabecinegras (Ichthyaetus melanocephalus) en las marismas de Santander que en las de Santoña. La gaviota de detrás es una reidora (Chroicocephalus ridibundus).

We saw more Mediterranean Gull in the Santander marshes than in Santoña. The gull behind is a Black-headed Gull.

Archibebe claro (Tringa nebularia).

Después, recorrimos la parte este de la bahía y vimos grandes bandos de aves limícolas pero como había poca luz no saqué la cámara. Lo que más me llamó la atención fue ver la cantidad de zarapitos reales (Numenius arquata) que había.

Afterwards, we toured the eastern part of the bay and saw large flocks of waders but as there was little light I didn't take out my camera. What caught my attention the most was seeing the number of Eurasian Curlew that there were.

Dos machos de silbón europeo (Anas penelope). Yo creo que había menos que en otros años.

Two males Eurasian Wigeon. I think there were less than in other years.

También había muchos chorlitos grises (Pluvialis squatarola).

There were also many Grey Plover.

Ostreros euroasiáticos (Haematopus ostralegus).

Eurasian Oystercatcher.

Abundaban los correlimos comunes (Calidris alpina).

Dunlings were very abounded.

Un zarapito real (Numenius arquata) entre los correlimos comunes (Calidris alpina). Nos costó encontrar algún zarapito trinador (Numenius phaeopus) y, además, no saqué ninguna foto de esta especie.

An Eurasian Curlew among Dunlings. It was difficult for us to find any Whimbrel and, furthermore, I did not take any photos of this species.

Un grupo de espátulas comunes (Platalea leucorodia) juveniles. Fijaos que algunas de las plumas primarias de sus alas tienen una terminación de color negro.

A group of Eurasian Spoonbill juveniles. Notice that some of the primary wing feathers have a black finish.

Gavota sombría (Larus fuscus).

.Lesser Black-backed Gull.

Una pareja de cercetas comunes (Anas crecca). La hembra es la de la izquierda.

A pair of Common Teals. The female is the one on the left.

Garzas reales (Ardea cinerea) con espátulas comunes (Platalea leucorodia).

Grey Herons and Eurasian Spoonbills.

Un grupo de ánades azulones (Anas platyrhynchos). Fijaos que el macho que está más a la izquierda tiene un patrón de color distinto a la forma nominal.

A group of mallards (Anas platyrhynchos). Notice that the leftmost male has a different color pattern than the nominate form.

Andarríos chico (Actitis hypoleucos).

Common Sandpiper.

Solo vimos una pareja de tarros blancos (Tadorna tadorna).

We only saw a pair of Common Shelduck.

En un momento determinado todas las aves que estaban en la bahía se pudieron a volar. Seguro que pasó algún ave de presa que nosotros no vimos y sembró el pánico entre ellas.

At a certain moment all birds that were in the Bay took off. Surely some bird of prey passed by that we didn't see and spread panic among them.

Gaviones atlánticos (Larus marinus).

Y este otro entre cormoranes grandes (Phalacrocorax carbo) que ya estaban en plumaje nupcial.

And this other among Great Cormorants that were already in breeding plumage.

Un grupo de chorlitejos grandes (Charadrius hiaticula).

A flock of Great Ringed Plover.

Había bastantes zorzales comunes (Turdus philomelos).

There were quite a few Song Thrush.

Cada año hay mas cisnes vulgares (Cygnus olor).

Every year there are more Mute Swans.

Me impresiona ver estas grandes y pesadas aves tomando vuelo. Eso sí, necesitan correr por encima del agua un buen rato antes de estar libres en el aire. No me extraña que les cueste tanto despegar pues algunos machos pueden llegas a pesar 15 kg.

It impresses me to see these large and heavy Birds taking off. Of course, they need to run above water for a long time before being free in the air. It is not surprising that it is so difficult for them to take off because some males can weigh up to 15 kg.

Gaviota reidora (Chroicocephalus ridibundus). Algunas de ellas ya comenzaban a mostrar su plumaje nupcial.

Black-headed Gull. Some of them were already beginning to show their nuptial plumage.

Lo mismo sucedía con las agujas colinegras (Limosa limosa).

The same happened with Black-tailed Godwits.

Había muchas barnaclas carinegras (Branta bernicla).

There were manyy Brent Goose.

Un colimbo ártico (Gavia arctica).

A Black-throated Diver.

Colimbo chico (Gavia stellata).

Red-throated Diver.

Vimos varios cormoranes moñudos (Phalacrocorax aristotelis).

We saw several European Shag.

Cormorán grande (Phalacrocorax carbo).

Great Cormorant.

Es una pena que los colimbos grandes (Gavia immer) no estén en esta época con su bonito plumaje nupcial. Lo mismo ocurre con las otras dos especies que habíamos visto.

It is a pity that Great Northern Diver are not around at this time with their beautiful breeding plumage. The same is true of the other two species that we had seen.

En el puerto comercial de Santoña había dos alcas comunes (Alca torda). En esta foto se puede ver a un adulto.

In the commercial harbour of Santoña there were two Razorbills . In this photo you can see an adult.

Y en esta otra un adulto a la derecha y en la izquierda un ejemplar de primer invierno.

And in this other one an adult on the right and on the left a first winter specimen.

Macho de pinzón vulgar (Fringilla coelebs).

Common Chaffinch male.

Después del puerto de Santoña fuimos a dar una vuelta por las lagunas de las conservaras. En la foto cucharas comunes (Spatula clypeata).

After visiting Santoña Harbour we went for a walk around the cannery lagoons. In the photo Northern Shoveler.

Focha común (Fulica atra).

Había bastantes ánades frisos (Anas strepera). En la foto un macho.

There were quite a few Gadwall. In the photo a male.

Y en esta una hembra.

And in this one a female.

Macho de porrón europeo (Aythya ferina).

Common Pochard male.

Hembra.

Female.

Tan solo había una hembra de porrón moñudo (Aythya fuligula).

There was only a female Tufted Duck.

Y también una hembra de porrón pardo (Aythya nyroca).

And also a Ferruginous Duck female.

Mosquitero común (Phylloscopus collybita).

Common Chiffchaff.

Garceta común (Egretta garzetta).

Little Egret.

Somormujo lavanco (Podiceps cristatus).

Great Crested Grebe.

Vimos una pareja de halcones peregrinos (Falco peregrinus). Ambos llegaron con una presa cada uno.

We saw a pair of peregrine falcons. Both arrived with a prey each.

Un video de como el halcón peregrino (Falco peregrinus) quita las plumas del ave capturada para comérsela.

A video of how the Peregrine Falcon removes the feathers of a captured bird to eat it.

Y para finalizar el relato, un grupo de agujas colinegras (Limosa limosa).

And to end the story, a group of Black-tailed Godwits.
