Pajareando por Madrid. Birding Madrid.

Hola una vez más.
Hi again.

In the following link you can see our next national and foreign Birds and Mammals photographic and observation trips. I hope you like them and I encourage you to come with me. An experience that you will not forget. These trips are conditioned to the situation in which the destinations are with respect to the coronavirus pandemic.

This time I show you some photos that I was able to take on our excursion scheduled for March 20 to the Jarama Valley and the Southeast Regional Park of Madrid. I did not take many photos but I share them with you anyway.

The day was a bit cold, early in the morning, and windy but at all times a splendid sun shone.

Our first stopping point was Patones, where we could observe quite a few Crag Martin that were perching on the rocky clifs to warm up a little with the sun.

House Sparrow male beside his nest.

Un gorrión chillón (Petronia petronia).
A Rock Sparrow.

Vimos varios ejemplares de roquero solitario (Monticola solitarius). Los de las fotos son machos.
We saw several specimens of Blue Rock Thrush. Those in the photos are males.

También abundaban los mirlos comunes (Turdus merula). En la foto un macho.
Blackbirds were also abundant. In the photo a male.

Rabilargos ibéricos (Cyanopica Kooki). Hay que ver que bonitos son.
Iberian Magpie. How beautiful they are.

Un macho de curruca cabecinegra (Sylvia melanocephala).
Sardinian Warbler male.

Había varias parejas de escribanos montesino (Emberiza cia).
There were several pairs of Rock Bunting.

Song Thrush. I don't know if it was due to the storm Filomena but I have observed that fewer birds are seen in the places I have been. Hopefully it is because the birds that were in the community of Madrid when the storm fell have moved to other places in search of food.

However, I have observed that there are a greater number of Great Bustards than in other years in the places visited. The white spots is a flock of them in flight. As there was a lot of refraction, they are hardly visible in the photo.

Some males could already be seen doing breeding display and others in a threatening attitude.

Un inmaduro de águila real (Aquila chrysaetos). Son impresionantes.
An immature Golden Eagle. They are awesome.

After the steppe area and to end the trip, we went to different places in the Southeast Regional Park of Madrid. In the photo a European Serin singing deeply.

Había varias parejas de somormujo lavanco (Podiceps cristatus).
There were several pairs of Great Crested Grebe.

Un macho de porrón europeo (Aythya ferina).
Common Pochard male.

Otro.
Another.

Hembra.
Female.

We only saw a pair of Common Teal although it did not surprise me very much as the vast majority have already migrated to northern Europe to breed. In the photo the male.

Y en esta otra los dos.
And in this other both.

Ánades frisos (Anas strepera).
Gadwalls.

An Osprey flew over us and flew away following the river Jarama in a northeast direction to continue its migration.

Un bonito milano real (Milvus milvus).
A beautiful Red Kite.

Pajareando por España, esteparias por Toledo. Birding Spain, Steppe Birds at Toledo

This week I decided to go to see how the steppe birds were in the province of Toledo, specifically in the vicinity of Torrijos.

The weather was good and sunny with a very pleasant temperature, a maximum of 18º Celsius.

I was quite lucky in terms of bird watching because I was able to contemplate the four species that I wanted to see and that I will show you later. As for the photos, there was not so much luck because I had almost no one around and when they were close, they were against light. On another occasion it will have to be.

On the way to my destiny I made a stop in an abandoned stable and I was really enjoying watching Lesser kestrel. In the photo a male.

Hembra.
Female.

At my destination, the first thing I saw was a pair of Red-legged Partridge. I remember when years ago, on a walk like the one I made, many were seen. Now I'm happy when I see one because very few are left.

A very distant male Hen Harrier.

I was only able to watched this group of Black-bellied Sandgrouse.

It was made up of three males and two females.

A pair of Southern Grey Shrike.

Había muchos escribanos trigueros (Miliaria calandra).
There were many Corn Buntings.

Mochuelo europeo (Athene noctua).
Little Owl.

Avutardas comunes (Otis tarda).
Great Bustards (Otis tard). I saw several groups and two of them very numerous but very far away and in flight. This other group was not numerous and they were frightened at quite a distance.

To take photos it is better if they are very few or, better still, one because they hold more proximity. In a large group there is always someone who is more fearful and scares before the others but they all end up following it.

It always amazes me how well this heavy bird can fly.

It was very difficult for me to find the Little Bustard because crops were very high and I saw them in this legume field which was lower.

A video of the first Little Bustard I saw. Frankly difficult to spot when they are on fields.

Los machos ya tenían el plumaje nupcial.
Males already had the breeding plumage.

Among them I could spot a group of Pin-tailed Sandgrouse. I upload a video when I realized that they were with the Little Bustards.

Luego vi otros grupos volando.
Then I saw other flocks flying.

Este fue el más numeroso.
This was the most numerous.
