Costa Rica, primera parte

 

Hola una vez más.
Hi again.

En el siguiente enlace podéis ver nuestros próximos viajes fotográficos y de observación de aves y mamíferos nacionales y al extranjero. Espero que os gusten y os animéis a venir conmigo. Una experiencia que nunca olvidareis. Estos viajes están condicionados a la situación en que se encuentren los destinos con respecto a la pandemia del coronavirus.
In the following link you can see our next national and foreign Birds and Mammals photographic and observation trips. I hope you like them and I encourage you to come with me. An experience that you will not forget. These trips are conditioned to the situation in which the destinations are with respect to the coronavirus pandemic.


Hoy os voy a enseñar las cosas que pude ver en un viaje a Costa Rica para ver si luego os lo puedo ofrecer. Como saque muchas fotos he tardado mucho en procesar las casi 15.000 fotos que saque. Fui con mi buen amigo Javier, que sin él no hubiera sido posible el viaje.
Today I am going to show you the things that I could see on a trip to Costa Rica to see if I can offer it to you later. As I took a lot of photos, it took me a long time to process the almost 15,000 photos that I took. I went with my good friend Javier, without him the trip would not have been possible.

En esta primera parte os muestro por días lo que vimos, del 2 al 9. Llegamos a San José la tarde del día 1 de febrero y regresé a España en día 15 del mismo mes. La experiencia fue inolvidable.
In this first part I show you for days what we saw, from 2 to 9. We arrived in San José on the afternoon of February 1 and returned to Spain on the 15th of the same month. The experience was unforgettable.

Los lugares que visitamos fueron: Parque Nacional de Carara,  Abangaritos, Monteverde, Parque Nacional Volcán Arenal, Estación Biológica La Selva, Puerto Viejo, Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo y para finalizar el Parque Nacional de los Quetzales.
The places we visited were: Carara National Park, Abangaritos, Monteverde, Arenal Volcano National Park, La Selva Biological Station, Puerto Viejo, Braulio Carrillo National Park and finally the Quetzales National Park.
El tiempo fue muy variable pero no tuvimos ningún periodo de lluvias torrenciales al ir en la época seca del año.
The weather was very variable but we did not have any period of torrential rains as i went in the dry season.

DOS DE FEBRERO: SAN JOSÉ - PARQUE NACIONAL DE CARARA
FEBRUARY SECOND: SAN JOSÉ - CARARA NATIONAL PARK

Como el vuelo llegaba tarde decidímos pasar la primera noche en las inmediaciones de San José y cogí una noche en el hotel el Robledal. Por la mañana temprano, después del desayuno, di un paseo por los jardines del hotel y ya tuve un buen contacto con la fauna y flora de Costa Rica.
As flight arrives late, we decided to spend the first night in the vicinity of San José and took a night at the El Robledal Hotel. Early in the morning, after breakfast, I took a walk through the Hotel gardens and I already had a good contact with the fauna and flora of Costa Rica.


Bienteveo común (Pitangus sulphuratus).

Cucarachero nuquirrufo (Campylorhynchus rufinucha).

Una bonita ardilla chiza (Sciurus variegatoides). Las hay de varios mantos o colores.
Variegated squirrel. They can be in various shades or colors.


Una preciosa orquídea. Una planta que me encanta y es abundantísima en Costa Rica. Esta me imagino que será una especie creada por el hombre.
A beautiful orchid.. A plant that I love and is very abundant in Costa Rica. This I imagine is a man-made species.

El primer encuentro con primates, los monos capuchinos (Cebus capucinus).

También la primer iguana rayada (Ctenosaura similis).

Esta comió con nosotros y de nuestro plato.
It ate with us and from our plate.


Por la tarde hicemos un tour por el río Tárcoles. Dio mucho de sí el paseo en barco.
In the afternoon we took a tour of the Tárcoles River. The boat ride was very rewarding.

Una de las aves que más me apetecía ver en este viaje el guacamayo macao (Ara macao). Son increíbles sus colores.
One of the Birds that I most wanted to see on this trip the Scarled Macaw. Its colors are awesome.

Había muchos cocodrilos americanos (Crocodylus acutus) por el río.
There were many American Crocodiles in the river.



Este fue el más grande de todos los que vimos.
This was the largest of all we saw.

Otra de las aves que me apetecía mucho observar y fotografiar el Avetigre mejicana (Tigrisoma mexicanum).

TRES DE FEBRERO: PARQUE NACIONAL DE CARARA - MONTEVERDE
FEBRUARY THIRD: CARARA NATIONAL PARK - MONTEVERDE


Lo primero que hicimos en el hotel que nos estábamos quedando fue dar un paseo por sus jardines. A pesar de tener comederos para alimentar a las aves, como había muy pocos turistas, no les ponían comida ni néctar para los colibrís.
The first thing we did at the hotel we were staying was take a walk through its gardens. Despite having feeders to feed birds, as there were very few tourists, they did not put food or nectar for the hummingbirds.


Solo había unas pocas pipas que comieron con avidez una pareja de guacamayos macao (Ara macao).
There were only a few sunflowers seeds that were avidly eaten by a pair of Scarlet Macaws.

Me encantó esta ave, la Urraca hermosa cariblanca (Calocitta formosa).
I loved this bird, the White-throated Magpie-Jay.

Después visitamos varios de los senderos habilitados en el Parque Nacional de Carara.
Then we visit several trails at Carara National Park.



La vegetación era exuberante. Precioso pero muy difícil para ver y, sobre todo, fotografiar aves.
Vegetation was lush. Beautiful but very difficult to see and especially photograph Birds.

Al medio día bajamos hasta la costa.
At noon we went down to the coast.

Algunos zopilotes negros (Coragyps atratus) se estaban comiendo una raya.

Y otros llegaban al festín.
And others came to the feast.

Cuando regresábamos al parque vimos una familia de monos aulladores (Alouatta palliata).
When where returning to the Park we saw a family of Mantled Howler.



En uno de los senderos del parque vimos una familia de monos araña centroamericano (Ateles geoffroyi).
On one of the park trails we saw a family of Spider Monkeys.


Este fue el único basilisco común (Basiliscus basiliscus) que vimos en todo el viaje.
This was the only Common Basilisk we saw on the entire trip.



Había varios machos de saltarín cabeirrojo norteño (Ceratopipra mentalis) tomando un baño en un arroyo pero no había casi luz. Las fotos están tomadas a 10.000 ISO. Una barbaridad.
There were several male Red-capped Manakin taking a bath in a stream but there was almost no light. Photos are taken at 10,000 ISO. An atrocity.

CUATRO DE FEBRERO: MONTEVERDE - CHOMES Y ABANGARITOS - MONTEVERDE
FEBRUARY FOURTH: MONTEVERDE - CHOMES Y ABANGARITOS - MONTEVERDE


Para visitar las zonas de Chomes y Abangaritos decidimos ir desde Monteverde pues en tiempo y distancia era casi igual que desde Carara y en Monteverde había más hoteles y más económicos. Este es donde nos alojamos las noche anterior y las 3 siguientes.
To visit Chomes and Abangaritos areas we decided to go from Monteverde because in time and distance it was almost the same as from Carara and in Monteverde there were more and cheaper hotels. This is where we stayed the night before and the next 3.

En algunas paradas en el camino hacia esas dos localidades vimos este Momoto cejiazul (Eumomota superciliosa).
At some stops on the way to those two towns we saw this Turquoise-browed Motmot.

En un puertecito pesquero de Chomes había muchos rabihorcado magnífico (Fregata magnificens). Este es un macho.
In a small fishing port in Chomes there were many magnificent Magnificent Frigatebird. This is a male.

CINCO DE FEBRERO: MONTEVERDE 
FEBRUARY FIFTH: MONTEVERDE 


Este día lo dedicamos a pasear por los distintos caminos de Reserva biológica Bosque Nuboso Monteverde.
We spend this day walking through different paths of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve.



Ni que decir tiene la belleza y frondosidad del bosque nuboso. Impresionante.
Needless to say the beauty and lushness of the cloud forest. Awesome.

Después de comer visitamos el bar El Colibrí muy cerca de la entrada al parque. Era impresionante la cantidad de ellos que había y los tenian muy cerca sin que se espantasen.
After lunch we visited the El Colibrí bar very close to the entrance to the park. It was impressive how many of them there were and they had them very close without being scared.

SEIS DE FEBRERO: MONTEVERDE 
FEBRUARY SIXTH: MONTEVERDE 


Este día fuimos a visitar la Reserva Curi Cancha.
This day we went to visit the Curi Cancha Reserve.

En un impresionante árbol de aguacatillo había una hembra de Quetzal guatemalteco (Pharomachrus mocinno). El ave que más ilusión me hacia ver en Costa Rica. Pero lo que yo quería ver era los machos. Tuve que esperar hasta el penúltimo día de viaje para verlos.
In an impressive Avocado tree there was a female Resplendent Quetzal. The bird that made me most excited to see in Costa Rica. But what I wanted to see was males. I had to wait until the penultimate day of this trip to see them.

Para comer nos fuimos a un restaurante donde tenían comederos y estuvimos bastante rato sacando fotografias. La tarde nos la tomamos de descanso que llevavamos ya una buena paliza de tantos días caminando.
For lunch we went to a restaurant where they had feeders and we spent a long time taking pictures. We took a break in the afternoon because we have already been beaten up from so many days walking.

SIETE DE FEBRERO: MONTEVERDE - PARQUE NACIONAL VOLCAN ARENAL
FEBRUARY SEVENTH: MONTEVERDE - VOLCAN ARENAL NATIOANL PARK

Por la mañana fuimos a Bosque Eterno de los Niños Bajo del Tigre pues nos habían dicho que era un sitio muy bueno para observar el campanero tricarunculado (Procnias tricarunculatus). Le oímos realmente cerca pero con tanta vegetación fue imposible verle. Por la tarde regresamos al Bar el Colibrí pues el viaje hasta Volcán Arenal era largo.
In the morning we went to the Bajo del Tigre Children's Eternal Forest as we had been told that it was a very good place to observe the Three-wattled Bellbird. We heard him really close but with so much vegetation it was impossible to see him. In the afternoon we returned to Bar el Colibrí as the trip to Arenal Volcano was long.

Vimos muchas mariposas. Pero la mayoría en vuelo.
We saw a lot of butterflies. But most of them in flight.



Lo mejor del día fue poder ver a este Saltarín colilargo (Chiroxiphia linearis).
The best of the day was being able to see this Long-tailed Manakin.



En el bar el colibrí saque estas especies. Brillante coroniverde (Heliodoxa jacula).
At Bar el Colibrí I photographed these species. Green-crowned Brilliant.

A la llegada al Parque Nacional Volcán Arenal vimos a un grupo de Semillero volatinero (Volatinia jacarina).
Upon arrival at Arenal Volcano National Park, we saw a group of Blue-black Grassquit.

OCHO DE FEBRERO: PARQUE NACIONAL VOLCAN ARENAL
FEBRUARY EIGHTH: VOLCAN ARENAL NATIOANL PARK

Por la mañana hicimos dos senderos del Parque y por la tarde nos fuimos hasta el cercano Arenal Observatory Lodge & Spa que tienen comederos y unos magníficos paseos por su finca.
In the morning we did two trails in the Park and in the afternoon we went to the nearby Arenal Observatory Lodge & Spa that has feeders and some magnificent trails around its property.

Había muchas ceibas (Ceiba pentandra).
There were many Kapok tree.



Esta concretamente tiene 400 años y era muy conocida en la zona por ser tan grande.
This one is 400 years old and was well known in the area for being so large.

Ameiva centroamericana​ (Holcosus festivus).
Middle American ameiva.


Otro de los paseos por el parque discurría cercano al lago.
Another of the paths in the park ran close to the lake.

Me lleve una gran alegría al comprobar que ese tronco no era tal, si no que se trataba de un Nictibio grande (Nyctibius grandis).
I was very happy to see that this log was not such, but that it was a Great Potoo.

En el camino de entrada al hotel, este Busardo aliancho (Buteo platypterus) se había afuncado en los postes de electricidad. Lo vimos casi todas las veces que pasamos por allí.
On the driveway to the Hotel, this Broad-winged Hawk. had gotten into the power poles. We saw it almost every time we passed by.



En los jardines del hotel hay puentes colgantes, torres de 40 metros de altura, estanque para las ranitas, marqavillosos paseos y maravillosas vistas.
In the hotel gardens there are hanging bridges, 40 meter high towers, a pond for frogs, marvelous walks and wonderful views.



A las 14:00 horas el restaurante para las aves estaba abierto. En la foto una pareja de pavón norteño (Crax rubra).
At 2:00 pm the Birds restaurant was open. In the photo a pair of  Great Curassow.


El macho es predominantemente negro.
Male is predominantly black.


Y la hembra predominantemente rufa. Detalle de su cabeza.
And female predominantly rufous. Detail of her head.


Durante dos horas fue un espectáculo de luz, color y sonido. En la foto un Arasarí acollarado (Pteroglossus torquatus).

Paloma montaraz común (Leptotila verreauxi).
White-tipped Dove.


Paloma montaraz pechigrís (Leptotila cassinii).

Reinita culiparda (Myiothlypis fulvicauda).
Buff-rumped Warbler.


Tangara terciopelo (Ramphocelus passerinii) macho. Quizá no sea la tangara más colorida pero para mi fue la que más me gusto de toda las vistas. 
Passerini's Tanager male. It may not be the most colorful tanager but for me it was the one I liked the most of all we saw.


Parecía realmente de terciopelo.
It really looked like velvet.
