Parque Nacional de Monfragüe. Monfrague National Park.

Hola una vez más.
Hi again.

In the following link you can see our next national and foreign Birds and Mammals photographic and observation trips. I hope you like them and I encourage you to come with me. An experience that you will not forget.

This post is about our trip organized on March 23 to the National Park of Monfragüe to watch cliff-nesting Birds, and Black Storks. It was a very nice trip and the group connected very well even though one of the clients was a foreigner and speaking in Spanish and English was a bit of a mess for me. On some occasions I spoke in English to the Spaniards and to the foreigner in Spanish but with good sense of humor everything was solved and everyone was in a very good mood.

The day was very sunny but very windy which made it a little difficult to observe certain species because they did not behave as usual.

Now I present the protagonist of the tour as this male Rock Bunting was observing us for a while to the delight of observers and photographers. Afterwards, you will see how sassy was this little fellow.

Shortly after arriving we were able to contemplate the magnificent Spanish Imperial Eagle. We saw it several times and sometimes the couple was flying at the same time and I imagine that they have not laid eggs yet or, at this point of the year, they have lost their clutch.

So that several clients can see at the same time what the terrestrial telescope captures, I have made a contraption that keeps the telescope attached to the phone and thus we are able to see in detail more than one person the desired Bird or what he is doing. It's like a digiscoping but with the mobile phone instead of a camera.

Obviously they do not have much quality but you can see pretty well what they do. A new toy that allows me to show you some scenes in video.

El águila imperial ibérica (Aquila adalbertien vuelo.
The Spanish Imperial Eagle in flight.

We also saw several Black Storks. This was the first we saw on land and of course we had to stop.

It is awesome to see how the specimens that are going to reproduce at Monfragüe are much more tame than those we can see elsewhere.

In this video you can see how the Black Stork tries to hide its beak between the feathers of the chest but the wind prevents it. They do this to go unnoticed as the red of the beak is very striking.

The Alpine Swifts had already arrived but between the wind and the speed at which they are going this is the best I could get.

We also saw several pairs of Egyptian Vultures.

Y muchos milanos negros (Milvus migrans).
And many Black Kites.

We also saw fleetingly the Bonelli's Eagle. And I say fleetingly because I think that we did not all see it.

The Peregrine Falcon male was very active but very far away. I think it should be the male because the female should be incubating.

It is spectacular the high amount of Griffon Vultures that can be seen in the Park.

In this video you can see how one of the parents of a griffon vulture  who had just arrived to relieve his partner, feed his almost newborn baby chicken. Notice that the adult's neck is stained with blood from having eaten recently.

Some more photos of the majestic flight of this impressive bird.

And the protagonist of the trip that we made a whole Book of him. First the Rock Bunting appeared timidly in the part of the rock that was farthest from where we were.

And little by little he was losing his fear and he got closer.

Y más cerca.
And closer.

And more close that we almost did not fit into the frame of the photo.

Even one of the clients approached to take a picture with his phone because he is more observant than a photographer but of course, he was so close that he missed a chance like that. The Bird did not even flinch.

Black storks had not yet begun with the construction of their nests.

But they did not stop flying over the area where we were.

It is awesome the iridescence that these Birds have in their plumage.

In the distance we saw this Short-toed Eagle. For me it was the first one of this season.

And as expected, the Blue Rock Thrush did not miss the appointment. These two are males.

Llamó mi atención este bello lirio silvestre.
This beautiful wild Lily caught my eye.

Because of the strong East wind Griffon Vultures did not let us see their faces when we climbed up to the Castle. And in addition the number of specimens that passed was much smaller than in other occasions. Well, everyone except this one.

Pasaron solo dos buitres negros (Aegypius monachus). Este más lejos.
Only two black vultures passed. This further.

Y esto otro más cercano.
And this one closer.

Vimos muchos pinzones vulgares (Fringilla coelebs). En la foto un macho.
We saw many Common Chaffinch. In the photo a male.

A beautiful Painted Lady.

And with this Red Admiral  I say goodbye to all of you until the next post.

Hasta pronto.
See you soon.
