Birding Madrid

Hola una vez más.
Hi again.

In the following link you can see our next national and foreign Birds and Mammals photographic and observation trips. I hope you like them and I encourage you to come with me. An experience that you will not forget.

On this occasion I show you two private trips that I make in the Community of Madrid. The first of them on April 2nd and the second on the 15th of this same month.

Once I received the species that each client wanted, I decided to make some itineraries in which most of the demanded species could be seen. To do this, I chose the Jarama Valley in the first trip and in the second, the Sierra Oeste.

The weather was good on both trips although in the second we had quite a bit of wind in the afternoon.

Since none of the clients liked photography, I did not have many opportunities to take many and good photos.

The strangest thing about the two trips was seeing a couple of Eagle Owls that have chosen a gardener in a building to make their nest.

Viaje del 2 de abril:
Trip of April 2nd:

Of all the moments lived in the two trips, the one I liked most was having the luck to watch the Great Bustard display and mating.

Despite having arrived early at the steppe area to see Great Bustards there was a lot of evaporation as you can see in the videos I took.

All the videos were taken with my cellular phone attached to the telescope. In this first you can see the courtship and copulation of these large Birds. It was great to contemplate this incredible moment and even more to have recorded it even with such low quality.

We also enjoyed a lot with this dispute that had two males. They spent a lot of time measuring their strenght but the thing did not go further and it was two immature Spanish Imperial Eagles that caused them to fly away along with a flock of fifty others that were in the area.

Then we went to see a small colony of Lesser Kestrels. In the photo a male.

And a small video of this beautiful Bird.

También había muchos gorriones chillones (Petronia petronia).
There were also many Rock Sparrows.

In the steppe area it is easy to contemplate also the two species of Vultures that inhabit the Community of Madrid. In this case it is a Black Vulture.

And in this other a Griffon Vulture.

I was surprised to see that this Common Buzzard was so trustful because they usually flee when you aproach. Maybe is that he was seeing a mouse nearby and he did not pay much attention to us.

And to end the day we moved to the area close to the mountains. In the photo a pale phase Booted Eagle.

And we saw a pair of Eurasian Sparrowhawks but I only photographed the female that was closest to where we were.

También había bastantes verderones comúnes (Carduelis chloris). En la foto un macho.
There were also many Greenfinches. In the photo a male.

Y serrines verdecillos (Serinus serinus).
And European Serins. As males are the ones who sing and are prettiest, that's why I always photograph them instead of females. They are spotted easily.

Suddenly I heard a drumming that I soon realized that it was of a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker since its frequency is shorter than the other Woodpeckers. It was a male that was not difficult to spot.

Avión roquero (Ptyonoprogne rupestris).
Crag Martin.

Había varios machos de roquero solitario (Monticola solitarius). Este fue el que más cerca vimos.
There were several males of Blue Rock Thrushes. This was the closest we saw.

Pero solo vimos dos hembras.
But only two females were seen.

I also like plants, flowers, insects, mammals, trees, in short, I like nature so as not to get bored you soo much. That is why I show you these two species that, although they are cultivated, they are very beautiful. In this photo it is a Lily.

And this other is a Freesia that in addition to being very beautiful have a spectacular fragrance.

And to finish with the story of the first trip I teach you this awesome golden eagle that was good enough to to show up.

Viaje del 15 de abril:
Trip of April 15th:

This beautiful male Rock Bunting was the first Bird we saw shortly after arriving at our destiny.

Había muchos aviones roqueros (Ptyonoprogne rupestris).
There were many Crag Martins.

Some were already building their nests as is the case in this Bird.

There were also quite a few Red-rumped Swallows.

A Beautiful male White Wagtail.

As it was cloudy Vultures were slow to fly. I was impatient as many are seen in this area but usually start flying earlier. In the photo a Black Vulture.

This was the first Spanish Imperial Eagle that we saw. It is an immature.

Buitre leonado (Gyps fulvus).
Griffon Vulture.

Then we saw more Spanish Imperial Eagles. Except my great friend who lacks some feathers in the right wing, the others were immature.

This specimen is different from the previous one because it has begun to molt the feathers of its wings.

Aquí las dos juntas.
Here the two together.

And with so many flying of strangers in the territory of my friend, she was forced to go there to see what was happening.

And in this last picture the three of them fly together. Rarely I have the chance to see three specimens of this scarce bird of prey.

And all this went over where this golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) was quietly perched in this high-voltage tower. It did not even try to drive them out of its territory.

Impresionante también esta ave.
Impressive also this bird.

Gum Rockrose were in bloom. There was a smell to remember.

And although we had heard many times the Common Cuckoo this was the only one we saw.

Other Birds of Prey that we watched were: Eurasian Marsh Harrier.

Busardo ratonero (Buteo buteo).
Common Buzzard.

Una pareja de culebrera europea (Circaetus gallicus).
A pair of Short-toed Eagle.

Y águila calzada (Aquila pennata).
And a pale phase Booted Eagle.

Macho de lavandera cascadeña (Motacilla cinerea).
Male Grey Wagtail.

Already past noon we went to eat at a picnic area and this European Nuthatch did not hesitate to come and see if we left some food on the table.

It was the day of the Iberian Magpie. We saw a lot during the whole day but I could only photograph this one.

After lunch we approach to a breeding colony of Griffon Vultures.

Una ortiguera (Aglais urticae).
A Small Tortoiseshell.

And finally I show you how a Eagle Owl has chosen a very special site for its reproduction, a gardener of a chalet.
In this photo you can see the eye of one of its chicks. This year I read that they has three offspring and have been breeding on this site for eight years. This place where they have chosen they nest has a video camera to see how chickens develop and prevent some soulless from doing something to the nest.

Hasta pronto.
See you soon.
