Próximos viajes. Next trips.

This week the post is about a photographic trip to Wetlands of La Mancha I made in the middle of October.

Thanks to the residual water contributions that some Cities make to the lagoons of La Mancha they have some water, otherwise they would all be dry since we have been in a persistent drought for many years.

El tiempo fue bueno y soleado.

The weather was good and sunny.

The first of the two lagoons we visited had few water and the birds were quite far from the observatories. In the photo a Water Pipit.

There were some Common Teals although still in eclipse plumage. Behind them, a group of Black-winged Stilt and the duck that is sleeping under the Stilt on the right and on that same line the one on the right are two Gadwalls.

Tres agachadizas comunes (Gallinago gallinago).
Three Common Snipes.

Había muchas cigüeñas blancas (Ciconia ciconia).
There were many White Storks.

You could also see some Green Sandpiper. The closest Bird.

We only saw a Ruff. It is the first bird in the center of the photo. I tell you because it is a bit like Where's Wally.

As I said Birds were far away. In the photo a flock of Northern Shovelers.

Había bastantes aguiluchos laguneros occidentales (Circus aeruginosus). En la foto una hembra adulta.
There were quite a few Eurasian Marsh Harriers. In the photo an adult female.

In this other photo you can see a group of Greater Flamingo, another of Red-crested Pochard, two Common Shelduck and the two Ducks in the upper right is a pair of Gadwall.

At noon we went to the second lagoon to see if we could take pictures of Birds that were closer. In the photo a female Common Stonechat.

It's a shame they are in winter plumage.

También había bastantes flamencos comunes (Phoenicopterus ruber). En la foto un juvenil.
There were also quite a few Greater Flamingos. In the photo a juvenile.
The differences are in the general color of the bird, its beak and iris.

Aunque había bastantes porrones europeos (Aythya ferina) ninguno quiso pasar cerca de los observatorios.
Although there were quite a few Common Pochard none wanted to pass close to the observatories.

Aun había pocos zampullines cuellinegros (Podiceps nigricollis).
There were still few Black-necked Grebe.

Probably, this is the lagoon that holds during winter the highest concentration of White-headed Ducks of Spain. There may be hundreds. In the photo a male.

They are not as striking as in breeding plumage.

At this time of year it is almost impossible to distinguish females from juveniles.

Cigüeñuela común (Himantopus himantopus).
Black-winged Stilt.

And the most daring Bird of all day was this Common Snipe that despite seeing us did not care about us.

Me encanta tener aves así de cerca.
I love having birds this close.

And with this photo of the lagoon I say goodbye to all of you until next post.
