En esta vez os enseño lo que pude fotografiar en la excursión programada de dos días a las Hoces del Alto Ebro a mediados del mes de julio.

This time I will show you what I was able to photograph on the two day trip programmed to the Hoces del Alto Ebro in mid-July.

En esta ocasión no nos acompañó mucho la suerte pues fuimos en una hola de calor y las temperaturas al medio día estaban en los 40 ºC, una cosa totalmente insólita para este lugar. Como consecuencia, las aves que pude fotografiar fueron muy pocas pues no se movían mucho y menos aun cantaban. Todas estaban a la sombra e intentando sobrevivir a estas altas temperaturas.

On this occasion luck was not on our side because we went in a heat wave and temperatures at noon were 40 ºC, something totally unusual for this place. As a consequence, the birds that I was able to photograph were very few because they did not move much and even less sang. They were all in the shade and trying to survive these high temperatures.

Sin embargo, pudimos disfrutar mucho con la cantidad y variedad de mariposas y otros insectos que había.
However, we were able to enjoy a lot with the quantity and variety of butterflies and other insects that were there.

Esta polilla era nueva para mi y la encontré muy bonita. Se trata de una esfinge abejorro de orla ancha (Hemaris fuciformis).

This moth was new to me and I found it very pretty. It is a Broad-bordered Bee Hawk-moth.

Colias de Berger (Colias alfacariensis).

Berger's Clouded Yellow.

Limonera (Gonepteryx rhamni).

Medioluto ibérica (Melanargia lachesis).

Iberian Marbled White.

Gitanilla real (Zygaena sarpedon).

Royal Burnet.

Mancha azul (Satyrium spini).

Blue-spot Hairstreak.

Lobito listado (Pyronia bathseba).

Spanish Gatekeeper.

Nacarada (Argynnis paphia).

Silver-washed Fritillary.

Vanesa de los cardos (Cynthia cardui).

Painted Lady.

Otra especie que no había visto nunca, tornasolada (Apatura iris). Toda una belleza.

Another species that I had never seen, Purple Emperor. A beauty.

Vimos muchas más especies de las que os muestro pero entre que éramos 8 participantes y el calor que hacia no y tuve muchas oportunidades de fotografiarlas. En la foto un papamoscas gris (Muscicapa striata).

We saw many more species than I am showing you, but between the fact that we were 8 participants and the heat, I did not have many opportunities to photograph them. In the photo a Spotted Flycatcher.

Una imagen muy refrescante en el intenso calor que hacía.

A very refreshing image in the intense heat it was.

Vimos al menos dos culebreras europeas (Circaetus gallicus).

We saw at least two Short-toed Eagle.

Un macho de aguilucho cenizo (Circus pygargus) con un pájaro como presa que debía levar a sus polluelos.

A male Montagu's Harrier with a bird as prey to raise his chicks.

Estuvimos intentando localizar alguna tarabilla norteña (Saxicola rubetra) pero no hubo suerte. En su lugar vimos varias tarabilla europea (Saxicola rubicola). En la foto un macho.

We were trying to spot some Northern Wheatear but with no luck. Instead we saw several Common Stonechat. In the photo a male.

Vimos bastantes vencejos reales (Apus melba).

We saw quite a few Alpine Swift.

Era impresionante ver como estos grandes vencejos se metían a una tremenda velocidad en las grietas de las paredes rocosas donde tenían a sus polluelos.

It was awesomw to observe how these great swifts got into the cracks of the rocky walls where they had their chicks at tremendous speed.

Una grata sorpresa fue poder contemplar a este adulto de halcón peregrino (Falco peregrinus).

A great surprise was being able to spot this adult Peregrine Falcon.

Aunque a los aviones comunes (Delichon urbica) no les gustaba nada su presencia.

Although House Martins did not like its presence at all.

Vimos varios mirlos acuáticos europeos (Cinclus cinclus) tanto adultos como jóvenes.

We saw several White-throated Dipper both adults and juveniles.

Muy pocas veces me dejo la cámara en la furgoneta pero esta fue una de ellas y como hacía tanto calor y pensé que este mirlo acuático europeo (Cinclus cinclus) no estaría mucho allí no me decidí subir a por ella. En resumen, él estuvo más de una hora permitiéndonos acercarnos a unos 4 metros de donde él estaba. Si llego a tener la cámara conmigo le habría hecho todo un book. Es la vez que más cerca he tenido a esta especie y, creedme, he visto muchos. Lo que si le hice fue tomar vídeos con el teléfono móvil.

I rarely leave my camera in the van but this was one of them and since it was so hot and I thought that this European Dipper (Cinclus cinclus) wouldn't be there too long I didn't decide to go up for it. In short, it spent more than an hour allowing us to get within 4 meters of where it was. If I had the camera with me, I would have made a whole book of it. It is the closest I have been to this species and, believe me, I have seen many. What I did do was take videos with my mobile phone.

El ave en cuestión se vino aun mas cerca a acicalarse. Fue un encuentro memorable.

The bird in question came even closer to preen. It was a memorable meeting.

Una alondra totovía (Lullula arborea) que no quiso que le sacase una foto con su cara despejada de ramas.

A Wood Lark that did not want a photo taken with its face clear of branches.

Un buitre leonado (Gyps fulvus).

A Griffon Vulture.

Me llamo mucho la atención que en este cartel al poner que hay vencejos reales (Apus melba), la foto no se corresponde con la especie que que dice que hay y en su lugar han puesto la de un vencejo común (Apus apus). Será para equivocar a la gente que visita este lugar, increible.

I was very struck by the fact that on this poster, when it says that there are Alpine Swift, the photo does not correspond to the species that it says there is and instead they have put that of a Common Swift. It will be to mislead people who visit this place, amazing.

En nuestro segundo punto de observación había un abrevadero con muchas ranas comunes (Pelophylax perezi).

At our second observation place there was a trough with many Iberian Water Frogs.

Un busardo ratonero (Buteo buteo).

A Common Buzzard.

Lo que nunca defraudan son los lugares que visitamos. Son una autentica maravilla.

What never disappoints are places we visit. They are a real wonder.

Hicimos una breve visita al Dolmen la Cotorrita. Hay varios en el área que visitamos.

We made a brief visit to the Dolmen la Cotorrita. There are several in the area we visited.

En los dos almuerzos nos tuvimos que proteger del intenso calor en los sitios con salto de agua que refrescaba algo el ambiente.

In the two lunches we had to protect ourselves from the intense heat in the places with waterfalls that cooled the environment somewhat.
