Esta entrada es sobre el viaje organizado a Somiedo, Asturias para ver el oso pardo cantábrico (Ursus arctos pyrenaicus) que hicimos del 9 al 12 de octubre. La suerte no nos acompañó en cuanto al avistamiento del oso cantábrico se refiere pero pudimos contemplar un macho de lobo ibérico (Canis lupus signatus)  que era la primera vez que yo lo veía en la naturaleza.

This post is about the organized trip to Somiedo, Asturias to see the Cantabrian Brown Bear that we did from October 9 to 12. Luck was not with us as far as the sighting of the Cantabrian Brown Bear is concerned, but we were able to contemplate a male Iberian Wolf that was the first time that I had seen it in nature.

El tiempo durante los cuatro días de la excursión fueron excelentes aunque las tardes y las madrugadas eran frías.

Weather during the four days of the excursion was excellent although the afternoons and early mornings were cold.

Antes de llagar a nuestro destino final hicimos dos paradas. Una para ver avutardas comunes (Otis tarda) y la otra para ver las grajas (Corvus frugilegus) que viven en la provincia de León. La población española de la especie se concentra en un solo núcleo reproductor situado en el cuadrante suroriental de la provincia de León, en las comarcas de Ribera del Órbigo, el Páramo, Tierras de León, Payuelo, Tierra de Campos y Ribera del Esla. Posiblemente estas poblaciones suponen un fragmento relicto de un contingente más extendido y numeroso que debió de ocupar en el pasado las regiones mediterráneas. Fuente Seo/Birdlife.

Before reaching our final destination we made two stops. One to see Great Bustards and the other to spot Rooks that live in the province of León. The Spanish population of the species is concentrated in a single reproductive nucleus located in the southeastern quadrant of the province of León, in the regions of Ribera del Órbigo, El Páramo, Tierras de León, Payuelo, Tierra de Campos and Ribera del Esla. Possibly these populations represent a remnant fragment of a larger and larger contingent that must have occupied the Mediterranean regions in the past. Source Seo / Birdlife.

En nuestra parada por Villafáfila, vimos varios grupos de avutardas comunes (Otis Tarda).

On our stop at Villafáfila, we saw several groups of Great Bustards.

Después continuamos nuestro camino hacia Somiedo y volvimos a parar a ver si éramos capaces de ver alguna graja (Corvus frugilegus). Tuvimos que esperar un rato pero al final pudimos ver muchas.

Then we continued our way to Somiedo and stopped again to see if we were able to spot any Rook. We had to wait a while but in the end we got to see a lot.

Para varias personas de la excursión era la primera vez que veían esta especie en España.

For several people on the excursion it was the first time they had seen this species in Spain.

Las esperas par ver al oso pardo cantábrico (Ursus arctos pyrenaicus) eran por la mañana temprano y por la tarde antes del anochecer. Durante el resto del tiempo me dedique a enseñar la zona a los participantes. Es una zona de inigualable belleza.

Waits to spot the Cantabrian Brown Bear were in the early morning and in the afternoon before dark. During the rest of the day we spent time getting to know the area to the participants. It is an area of incomparable beauty.

Algunas de las aves que vimos durante al excursión son difíciles de ver en otras partes de la geografía española. Este es el caso de carbonero palustre (Poecile palustris) que su distribución geográfica se circunscribe a la Cornisa Cantábrica y Pirineos.

Some of the Birds that we saw during the trip are difficult to see in other parts of the Spanish geography. This is the case of the Marsh Tit whose geographical distribution is limited to the Cantabrian Range and Pyrenees.

Este estaba muy atareado escondiendo los frutos de las hayas comunes (Fagus sylvatica) para tener una despensa de alimentos para el duro invierno.

This was very busy hiding fruits of the European Beech  to have a food pantry for the harsh winter.

Los serbales blancos (Sorbus aria) estaban con sus frutos ya maduros.

Common Whitebeam were with their fruits already ripe.

Y algunos ya presentaban sus mejores colores otoñales.

And some were already showing their best fall colors.

También tenían fruto los ejemplares femeninos de los acebos (Ilex aquifolium).

Female specimens of Holly Trees also bore fruit.

Vimos algunas mariposas pero solo pude fotografiar esta saltacercas (Lasiommata megera). 

We saw some Butterflies but I only got to photograph this Wall Brown.

Esta lagartija serrana (Iberolacerta monticola) estaba disfrutando del sol de medio día. Esta especie es endémica de la península ibérica.

This Iberian Rock Lizard  was enjoying the mid-day sun. This species is endemic to the Iberian Peninsula.

Me hizo mucha ilusión ver a un ejemplar adulto de águila real (Aquila chrysaetos) pero no así a las chovas piquigualdas (Pyrrhocorax graculus) que enseguida empezaron a hostigarla.

I was very excited to see an adult Golden Eagle but this was not the case of the Yellow-billed Chough that immediately began to harass it.

Al final siguió con su camino.

In the end it went on his way.

Un buitre leonado (Gyps fulvus) de los muchos que vimos.

A Griffon Vulture of the many we saw.

Busardo ratonero (Buteo buteo).

Common Buzzard.

Esta seta llamó mi atención.

This mushroom caught my eye.

Aunque vimos bastantes chovas piquigualdas (Pyrrhocorax graculus) esta fue la única que estuvo más cerca nuestro. El resto iban volando bastante altas.

Although we saw quite a few Yellow-billed Chough this was the only one that was closer to us. The rest were flying quite high.

Una hembra de colirrojo tizón (Phoenicurus ochruros).

A Black Redstart female. 

También vimos bastantes chovas piquirrojas (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax).

We also saw quite a few red-billed choughs.

Unos bonitos acentores alpinos (Prunella collaris).

Some pretty Alpine Accentor.

Otra belleza que se puede ver con relativa facilidad en estos parajes es el camachuelo común (Pyrrhula pyrrhula). En este caso es un macho comiendo los frutos del serval del cazador (Sorbus aucuparia) que tanto les gustan.

Another beauty that can be seen with relative ease in these place is the Common Bullfinch. In this case it is a male eating the fruits of a Rowan Tree that they like so much.

Aunque vimos hembras también, solo saque fotos a los machos al ser más llamativos.

Although we saw females too, I only take photos of males as they are more showy.

Un acentor común (Prunella modularis).

Durante nuestras esperas, los petirrojo europeos (Erithacus rubecula) nos deleitaban con sus cantos.

During our waits, European Robins  delighted us with their songs.

Los mosquitero comunes (Phylloscopus collybita) no paraba de cazar pequeños insectos al vuelo.

Common Chiffchaff did not stop hunting small insects in flight.

Como os comentaba al principio, en una de las esperas matutinas tuvimos la gran suerte de contemplar este lobo ibérico (Canis lupus signatus). Estaba tranquilamente echado observándonos, o eso nos pareció a los que allí estábamos. Yo estaba tan emocionado con la observación que no se me ocurrió poner el adaptador del telescopio terrestre para sacarle un vídeo o una foto mejor. Gracias a que uno de los clientes se le ocurrió sacarle estas dos fotos con el teléfono móvil pegándolo al telescopio que si no no tendríamos ni tan siquiera estas fotos testimoniales.

As I mentioned at the beginning, in one of the morning waits we had the great luck to contemplate this Iberian wolf. He was calmly lying down watching us, or so it seemed to those of us who were there. I was so excited about the observation that it didn't occur to me to put the spotting scope adapter to get a better video or photo of him. Thanks to the fact that one of the clients came up with the idea of taking these two photos with his mobile phone, sticking it to the telescope, otherwise we would not even have these testimonial photos.

Cuando vio que muchos telescopios le estaban apuntando y había mucho movimiento de gente, el lobo decidió irse al otro lado de la montaña.

When he saw that many telescopes were pointing at him and there was a lot of movement of people, the wolf decided to go to the other side of the mountain.
