Por la mañana decidimos regresar al  Arenal Observatory Lodge & Spa para hacer algunos de los múltiples paseos que tienen y que no habíamos hecho el día anterior.

In hte morning we decided to return to the Arenal Observatory Lodge & Spa to do some of the many trails it has and we had not done the day before.

Antes de irnos a la estación Biológica la Selva, pasamos de nuevo por los comederos del hotel. Ya no saque ninguna foto a los arasarís acollarados (Pteroglossus torquatus). Esta la tomé con el teléfono móvil y como podéis ver vinieron muchos.

Before going to the Estación Biológica la Selva, we went through the hotel feeders again. I did not take any photos of Collared Aracari. I took this with my cell phone and as you can see many came.

También vinieron muchos Caciques de Moctezuma (Psarocolius montezuma).

I was really looking forward to seeing this Hoffmann's Two-toed Sloth.

Me sorprendió mucho el ruido que hacen estas aves con sus alas como parte del cortejo. Costó mucho verlas pero no oírlas pues el ruido que hacían llegaba muy lejos a pesar de estar metidos en lo mas denso del bosque.

I was very surprised by the noise these Birds make with their wings as part of courtship. It was difficult to see them but not hear them because the noise they made reached very far despite being in the thickest of the forest.

Esta bonita araña captó mi atención tanto por su bonito colorido como por su tamaño. Se trata de una araña de seda dorada (Trichonephila clavipes) hembra.

This pretty Spider caught my eye both for its beautiful coloring and for its size. It is a female Golden Silk Orb-weaver.

When we went out for dinner this Frog was at the entrance.

ONCE DE FEBRERO:  ESTACIÓN BIOLÓGIA LA SELVA - PUERTO VIEJO

FEBRUARY ElEVENTH: ESTACIÓN BIOLÓGICA LA SELVA - PUERTO VIEJO

Estuvimos toda la mañana paseando por los senderos de la estación y después del almuerzo nos fuimos a un comedero de aves cercano y más tarde a ver si podíamos avistar a los guacamayo ambiguo (Ara ambiguus). En la foto un mosquerito centroamericano (Zimmerius parvus).

We spent the whole morning walking the trails of the Estación and after lunch we went to a nearby Bird feeder and later on to see if we could spot the Great Green Macaw. In the photo a Mistletoe Tyrannulet.

I was struck by this insect perched on a glass. I think it is a Green Leaf-mimic Katydid.

FEBRUARY TWELFTH: PUERTO VIEJO - PARQUE NACIONAL BRAULIO CARRILLO - PUERTO VIEJO

Por la mañana dimos unos paseos por el parque y por la tarde visitamos otro comedero de aves y luego volvimos a la zona de los Guacamayo ambiguo (Ara ambiguus).

In the morning we took a few walks in the park and in the afternoon we visited another bird feeder and then we returned to the area of the Great Green Macaw.

En Puerto Viejo vimos varios ejemplares de ibis verde (Mesembrinibis cayennensis).

In Puerto Viejo we saw several specimens of Green Ibis.

En esta ocasión pude fotografiar varias especies de mariposas.

FEBRUARY THIRTEENTH: PUERTO VIEJO - PARQUE NACIONAL BRAULIO CARRILLO - PARQUE NACIONA LOS QUETZALES.

Por la mañana volvimos a dar un paseo por Braulio Carillo y luego tuvimos que pasar por San José para hacernos una PCR para poder entrar de vuelta en España. Por la tarde fuimos a otro comedero para aves ya en nuestro destino final, el Parque Nacional los Quetzales.

In the morning we went back to take a walk through Braulio Carillo and then we had to go through San José to do a PCR to be able to get back to Spain. In the afternoon we went to another bird feeder at our final destination, Los Quetzeles National Park.

CATORCE DE FEBRERO:  PARQUE NACIONAL LOS QUETZALES

FEBRUARY FOURTEENTH: PARQUE NACIONA LOS QUETZALES.

Este día lo dedicamos entero a la búsqueda del quetzal guatemalteco (Pharomachrus mocinno). Como podéis ver en el cartel la altura de las montañas es impresionante y las temperaturas por la noche bajan mucho. Hacia frío.

We dedicate this entire day to the search of Resplendent Quetzal. As you can see on the poster, the height of the mountains is impressive and the temperatures at night drop a lot. It was cold.

Un sitio de gran belleza.

A place of great beauty.

En el hotel contratamos un guía y nos recogió a las 5:15 de la madrugada y enseguida pudimos ver a los machos de quetzal guatemalteco (Pharomachrus mocinno). Las fotos no valen nada pues la luz a esas intempestivas horas de la mañana eran casi nula. ISO 25.600 y la velocidad 1/100.

At the Hotel we hired a guide and he picked us up at 5:15 in the morning and immediately we could spot Resplendent Quetzal . Photos are poor because light at those untimely hours of the morning was almost nil. ISO 25,600 and 1/100 speed.

De todos modos, el madrugón mereció la pena.

Anyway, the early morning was worth it.

Luego regresamos al hotel y después de desayunar hicimos un poco de pajareo por sus comederos y la zona. En la foto un Zorzalito de Frantzius (Catharus frantzii).

Then we returned to the hotel and after breakfast we did a bit of birding around their feeders and the area. In the photo a Ruddy-capped Nightingale-Thrush.

At mid-morning we entered a path where we had been told that Quetzals could be seen quite likely during the day. In the photo a male Slaty Flowerpiercer.

There was an area with quite a few Avocados and we could hear the Quetzals but we couldn't see them.

Y cuando ya pensábamos que no iba a aparecer el quetzal guatemalteco (Pharomachrus mocinno) llego volando una pareja. Es impresionante ver cuando vuelan los movimientos de la cola del macho. En la imagen el macho.

And when we thought that the Resplendent Quetzal would not appear, a couple arrived flying. It is impressive to see the movements of the male's tail in fly. In the picture the male.

Como estaban tranquilos, decidimos pasar un buen rato a ver si se movía a otra rama que hubiese menos vegetación para poder fotografiarle entero, cosa no tan fácil debido a la longitud de sus plumas que casi llegan a un metro de longitud. 

As they were calm, we decided to have a good time to see if he moved to another branch that had less vegetation to be able to photograph it in its entirety, something not so easy due to the length of its feathers that almost reach a meter in length.

Las plumas largas no pertenecen a la las plumas de la cola propiamente dicha. Se trata de 4 plumas coberteraas suparcaudales muy alargadas y con mayor flexibilidad que las de la cola.

The long feathers do not belong to the tail feathers. It is about 4 very elongated suparcaudal covert feathers and with greater flexibility than those of the tail.

Al final el macho se posó en una rama que le podíamos fotografiar de frente que es en donde muestra el bonito colorido de su pecho.

At the end the male perched on a branch that we could photograph him from the front, which is where he shows the beautiful colors of his chest.

Para mi fueron los mejores momentos de todo el viaje pues era el ave que más quería ver de todas.

For me they were the best moments of the whole trip because it was the Bird that I wanted to see the most of all.

Como nuestro avión salía a las 3 de la tarde y teníamos que estar sobre las 13 horas, devolver el coche y demás, dimos un paseo andando por los alrededores del hotel a ver que podíamos observar. 

As our plane left at 3 in the afternoon and we had to be around 1 pm, return the car and others, we took a walk around the hotel to see what we could spot.

Fue una pena que no los tuviésemos más cerca pues son unas aves preciosas.

It was a pity that we did not have them closer because they are beautiful Birds.

Como resumen deciros que fue una experiencia inolvidable y que espero que con vuestra ayuda la pueda volver a hacer pues estoy organizando un viaje a Costa Rica que subiré a la web tan pronto lo tenga hecho.

As a summary I can tell you that it was an unforgettable experience and that I hope that with your help I can do it again because I am organizing a trip to Costa Rica that I will upload to the web as soon as I have done it.
