Carraca Europea. European Roller.

Hola una vez más.
Hi again.

In the following link you can see our next national and foreign Birds and Mammals photographic and observation trips. I hope you like them and I encourage you to come with me. An experience that you will not forget.

Próximos viajes. Next trips.

Once they let us travel between provinces, I decided to go to the Llanos de Cáceres, which although I have sometimes seen European Rollers, it was two years ago that I did not go to see them at this time of the year.

Fuente Seo BirdLife.

They are beautiful but rather suspicious birds that spend their winters in the tropical regions of Africa and come to Europe to reproduce. In the summer they can be found in the temperate and Mediterranean fringe of the Palearctic region, from North Africa to the west of the Himalayas. In Spain The main breeding nuclei are found in the middle Ebro basin, Extremadura and the eastern half of Andalusia, although the species appears distributed in many other regions, such as western Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha and Murcia. It is missing in both archipelagos and in North African territories. They have a length of 30 cm and a wingspan of 70 cm and as you will see some very striking colors. The vivid colors that it has under the wings when in fly are remarkable, but there was no luck and I could not get any in flight. Maybe next time. Seo BirdLife font.

Before reaching the desired place I was able to observe this Black Kite that was looking for something to hant.

And it was also the intention of this Short-toed Eagle but they like snakes and lizards more.

A male Lesser Kestrel carrying a Grasshopper for his chicks.

Although I had already seen some European Rollers, this just out of the nest juvenile was very close to where we passed.

Many of them carried Grasshopper to deed their chicks.

Algunas fotos más de esta bella especie.
Some more photos of this beautiful species.

A juvenile and an adult female Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni). The female was missing part of the tarsus and the entire leg but it seems to me that it did not prevent her from reproducing since I think that the one on the left is her son.

I do not dare to venture the species of these two juvenile Kestrel because not seeing their nails I do not know if they are common or lesser. In these nest boxes I have seen both species reproduce.

Instead this is a female of Common Kestrel. Notice that she has black nails, an unmistakable sign of this species.

Varias cajas nido estaban ocupadas por mochuelo europeo (Athene noctua).
Several nest boxes were occupied by Little Owl.

There were quite a few White Storks because, as I will show you later, this year there were a lot of Grasshopper.

A few more adult photos of European Roller.

No pueden ser más bonitas.
They cannot be prettier.

The juvenile did not move from its perch in all morning.

In the area you could see a good flock of Eurasian Jackdaw.

Un cuervo grande (Corvus corax).
Common Raven.

También había bastantes cogujadas comunes (Galerida cristata).
There were also quite a few Crested Lark.

Solo pude observar un águila imperial ibérica (Aquila adalberti).
I could only watch a Spanish Imperial Eagle.

Terrera común (Calandrella brachydactyla).
Short-toed Lark.

As I said before, I have never seen such a large concentration of Grasshopper.. In the photo a male.

Hembra.
Female.

Había por todos los lados.
There were everywhere.

Calandria común (Melanocorypha calandra).
Calandra Lark.

Y un águila calzada (Aquila pennatamorfo claro.
And a Booted Eagle pale morph.

As the heat was almost unbearable, 39º Celsius, I decided to go home. On the way there was a pair of Short-toed Eagle. This was the one that was perched closest to the road.

Seeing the Monfragüe National Park sign, I decided that despite the heat I was going to take a tour of the observatories to see if Black Storks had already flown from their nests. In the photo Griffon Vulture.

You could come adults feeding their already very large chicks.

One of the Black Stork nests no longer had chicks but it was seen to have been occupied.

En este otro solo quedaba uno.
In this one there was only one left.

Algunos adultos sobrevolaron la zona.
Some adults flew over the area.

I saw this male Blue Rock Thrush.

Y también a algunos buitres negros (Aegypius monachus) aunque demasiado altos.
And also to some Black Vultures although very high.

This Peregrine Falcon in addition to passing very high it went like a bullet.

And when I was leaving the Park, the common vultures were in their nest. I could see at least one fairly large chick. I do not know if I would have more because as I was in the sun I was afraid to get out of the van and dry instantly.

Espero que os haya gustado. Hasta pronto.
I hope you like it. See you soon.
