Esta semana os muestro lo que pudimos ver en el viaje programado para el fin de semana del 22 al 23 de febrero para ver el paso migratorio prenupcial de las grullas comunes (Grus grus)  por la laguna de Gallocanta.

This week I show you what we could see on the trip scheduled for the weekend of February 22-23 to observe the prenuptial migration of the Common Cranes at Gallocanta Lagoon.

La primera parte del sábado estaba previsto hacer una excursión por el cañón del Río Dulce pues saliendo de Madrid a las 8 de la mañana no podíamos llegar a la salida de las grullas de la laguna.

The first part of Saturday was scheduled to make an excursion through the Canyon of the Rio Dulce because leaving Madrid at 8 in the morning we could not get to the departure of the Cranes of the lagoon.

El tiempo fue muy bueno y con temperaturas muy agradables aunque la mañana del domingo fue francamente fría como luego podréis ver.

The weather was very good and with very pleasant temperatures although Sunday morning was really cold as you can see later.

La parte del canón que visitamos era muy bonita.

The part of the canon we visited was very pretty.

Aunque había menos buitres leonados (Gyps fulvus) de los que yo me esperaba. Aunque después de la cantidad de gente que llegó a lo largo de la mañana y que se podía andar por todos los sitios no me extrañó mucho.

Although there were fewer Griffon Vultures than I was expecting. Although after the amount of people who arrived during the morning and that you  could walk all over the place, it didn't surprise me much.

Había un pareja de cuervos grandes (Corvus corax).

There was a pair of Common Raven.

Antes de que empezara a llegar la gente pudimos disfrutar de los cantos de varios machos del escurridizo pero bonito escribano soteño (Emberiza cirlus).

Before people started arriving we could enjoy the songs of several males of the elusive but beautiful Cirl Bunting.

Había bastantes mitos (Aegithalus caudatus) aunque ninguno se estuvo muy quieto para que le pudiera sacar una foto decente.

There were quite a few Long-tailed Tit although none stood too still for a nice photo to be taken. 

También se podían observar algunos zorzales charlos (Turdus viscivorus).

We could also spot some Mistle Thrushes.

Este macho de gavilán común (Accipiter nisus) causó el pánico entre los pajarillos que allí había.

This male Eurasian Sparrowhawk caused panic among the little Birds that were there.

Los trepadores azules (Sitta europaea) estaban muy cantarines.

European Nuthatch were very singing.

Aunque vimos varios petirrojos europeos (Erithacus rubecula) este fue el más descarado. No le importaba nada que estuviéramos paseando por donde el estaba cantando.

Although we saw several European Robins this was the most brazen. He didn't care we were walking where he was singing.

Chochín común (Troglodytes troglodytes).

Winter Wren.

Había varias parejas de chovas piquirrojas (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax).

There were several pairs of Red-billed Chough.

Cuando las térmicas aparecieron también pudimos ver más buitres leonados ( Gyps fulvus).

When the thermal appeared we could also see more Griffon Vultures.

Y antes de salir del cañón este agateador europeo (Certhia brachydactyla)  nos entretuvo un buen rato.

And before leaving the canyon, this Short-toed Treecreeper amused us for a while.

Son muy miméticos y, por tanto, difíciles de ver cuando están en los troncos buscando alimento.

They are very mimetic and therefore difficult to spot when they are on logs looking for food.

Sobre las 2  llegamos a la laguna de la Zaida que, como podéis ver, no había recogido nada de agua este año.

About 2 o'clock we arrived at the lagoon of La Zaida that, as you can see, had not collected any water this year.

Sin embargo, la laguna de Gallocanta si tenía bastante agua.

However, the Gallocanta Lagoon did have water.

Con sus casi 8 kilómetros de longitud y una superficie de 14,6 kilómetros cuadrados la convierten en la mayor laguna de agua salada endorreica de Europa.

With its almost 8 kilometers in length and an area of 14.6 square kilometers, it is the largest endorheic salt water lagoon in Europe.

El primer ave que vimos al llegar fue a esta águila real (Aquila chrysaetos) y al cernícalo vulgar (Falco tinnunculus) que la estaba hostigando. Menudo coraje.

The first Bird we saw on arrival was this Golden Eagle and the Common Kestrel that was harassing it. What a courage.

Mientras íbamos a nuestro sitio de observación pudimos ver un bando de avefrías europeas (Vanellus vanellus).

While we were going to our observation place we could watched a flock of Northern Lapwing.

Y algunos escribanos trigueros (Miliaria calandra).

And some Corn Buntings.

Entre las 3 y las 5 de la tarde llegaron la mayoría de las grullas comunes (Grus grus) a la laguna.

Between 3 and 5 in the afternoon most of the Common Cranes arrived at the lagoon.

Venían bandos de todos los tipos. Algunos eran de pocos individuos y otros de cientos.

Flocks of all types came. Some were of few individuals and others of hundreds.

Pero lo que si era común en todos ellos es que eran muy ruidosos.

But what was common in all of them is that they were very noisy.

Esta tarde las grullas se estaban agrupando en tres grupos principales a lo largo de la laguna. Este es el que teníamos delante y que estaba en el medio de ella.

This afternoon Cranes were grouping into three main flocks along the lagoon. This is the one in front of us and that was in the middle of  it.

En el censo que el Gobierno de Aragón hace de las grullas comunes (Grus grus) el jueves de cada semana, el de esta había dado la cifra más alta de toda la migración prenupcial llegando a contarse 32.351. Si queréis podéis ver el censo de este año en el siguiente enlace Temporada 2019 - 2020

In the calculation that the Government of Aragon makes of the Common Cranes on Thursday of each week, that of this had given the highest number of all prenuptial migration, counting 32,351. If you want you can see this year's census in the following link: 2019 - 2020

Y al final de la tarde llegaron las más rezagadas. 

And at the end of the afternoon the laggards arrived.

El color que tomó el cielo, la entrada de las grullas comunes (Grus grus), el griterío de las que llegaban y de las miles que había en la laguna hace que sea un espectaculo que recordarás toda tu vida. Creedme.

The color that the sky took, the arrival of the Common Cranes, the screaming of those who arrived and the thousands that were in the lagoon makes it a spectacle that you will remember all your life. Believe me.

Como os decía al comienzo del blog la temperatura exterior cuando llegamos al sitio para ver la salida de las grullas comunes (Grus grus) a las 7:06 era de -5 º centígrados. No está nada mal.

As I said at the beginning of the post the outside temperature when we arrived at the place to see the departure of the Common Cranes at 7:06 was -5 º Celsius. It's not bad at all.

Llegamos antes del amanecer.

We arrived before Sunrise.

Menos mal que no hacía nada de viento pues si no no se si hubiésemos aguantado tan bajas temperaturas. Yo he llegado a estar allí a -9 y con viento.

Luckily it was not windy because if not I do not know if we had endured such low temperatures. I have been here at -9 and windy.

La salida no fue nada gloriosa pero de todos modos fueron momentos preciosos.

The departure was nothing glorious but they were precious moments anyway.

Entre bando y bando este escribano triguero (Miliaria calandra) no paraba de cantar y me vi en la obligación de fotografiarlo.

Between flock and flock this Corn Bunting did not stop singing and I was obliged to photograph him.

Que hermosas aves.

What beautiful Birds they are.

Después nos fuimos a desayunar que ya hacía hambre. En la foto una cogujada común (Galerida cristata).

Then we went to have breakfast that we were already hungry. In the photo a Crested Lark.

Algunas grullas comunes (Grus grus) habían salido a los campos que rodean a laguna para alimentarse antes de continuar con la migración.

Some Common Cranes had gone out to fields surrounding the lagoon to feed before continuing with migration.

Como la reverberación era muy fuerte decidimos ir por los campos para ver otras aves.

As the reverberation was very strong we decided to go through the fields to see other Birds.

Había muchas alondras comunes (Alauda arvensis).

There were many Sky Larks.

Y calandrias (Melanocorypha calandra).

And Calandra Larks.

Aunque se veían bastantes cernícalos vulgares (Falco tinnunculus) ninguno fue tan manso como esta hembra.

Although quite a few Common Kestrels could be seen, none of them were as fearless as this female.

Un macho de aguilucho pálido (Circus cyaneus).

A Hen Harrier male.

Y en esta otra fotos una hembra.

And in this other photos a female.

Gorrión chillón (Petronia petronia).

Rock Sparrow.

En la laguna había muchos tarros blancos (Tadorna tadorna).

In the lagoon there were many Common Shelducks.

Sobre las 3 de la tarde empezaron a llegar de nuevo a la laguna las grullas comunes (Grus grus). Casi no había ninguna cuando llegamos.

Around 3 in the afternoon Common Cranes began to arrive again at the lagoon. There was hardly any when we arrived.

Este día eligieron como punto de parada el norte y el sur de la laguna.

This day they chose as a stopping point the north and south of the lagoon.

También llegaron muchísimas.

Many also arrived.
