Esta vez, os muestro lo que pude fotografiar en dos viajes a La Mancha Húmeda, el primero de ellos el día 1 de abril en mi viaje organizado, y el segundo una visita privada el día 7 del mismo mes.

This time I show you what I was able to photograph on two trips to La Mancha Húmeda, the first of them on April 1 in my organized trip, and the second a private visit on the 7th of the same month.

El tiempo en ambos viajes fue muy bueno aunque algo caluroso para la época del año en la que fuimos.

The weather on both trips was very good, although a bit hot for the time of year we went.

Como comentario general, deciros que no se si se va a seguir llamando La Mancha Húmeda por mucho tiempo o debería pasar a llamarse La Mancha Seca. A excepción del complejo lagunar de Alcázar de San Juan, el resto de lagunas estaban prácticamente secas. Una verdadera pena.

As a general comment, tell you that I don't know if it will continue to be called La Mancha Húmeda for a long time or should it be renamed La Mancha Seca. With the exception of the Alcázar de San Juan lagoon complex, the rest of the lagoons were practically dry. What a pity.

Por lo demás las excursiones fueron muy buenas y pudimos contemplar infinidad de especies y alguna de ellas de difícil localización.

Apart from this, the excursions were very good and we were able to spot many species and some of them difficult to locate.

Día 1 de abril.
April 1st:

Empezamos el día buscando aves esteparias por terrenos aledaños a uno de los complejos lagunares que luego visitamos. Llegamos a localizar 5 parejas de Alcaraván común (Burhinus oedicnemus).

We start the day looking for steppe Birds in lands near one of the lagoon complexes that we later visit. We managed to locate 5 pairs of  Stone Curlew. 

Vimos dos grupos de ganga ibérica (Pterocles alchata) que, como podéis observar, son difíciles de encontrar cuando están posadas. El segundo grupo que vimos iba volando y son más fáciles de ver.

We saw two flocks of Pin-tailed Sandgrouse which, as you can see, are difficult to find when they are on land. The second group we saw was flying and easier to spot.

Un bonito macho adulto de sisón común (Tetrax tetrax).

A nice adult male Little Bustard.

Iba acompañando a tres hembras.

He was with three females.

Y este es el segundo grupo de ganga ibérica (Pterocles alchata) que vimos.

And this is the second flock of Pin-tailed Sandgrouse we saw.

Antes de de dejar la zona esteparia, descubrí un lejano grupo de avutarda euroasiática (Otis tarda). Había varios machos y también varias hembras.

Before leaving the steppe area, I discovered a distant group of Great Bustard. There were several males and also several females.

En Alcázar de San Juan, había unas 20 cercetas pardillas (Marmaronetta angustirostris) en uno de los observatorios. Al ser una de las especies de patos mas escasa del mundo se está llevando un proyecto de reintroducción de dicha especie en distintos humedales dentro de la península ibérica. Uno de estos lugares es Alcázar de San juan.

In Alcázar de San Juan, there were about 20 Marbled Teals in one of the observatories. Being one of the rarest duck species in the World, a reintroduction project for this species is being carried out in different wetlands within the Iberian Peninsula. One of these places is Alcazar de San Juan.

A pesar de ser un pato sin colores llamativos, yo las encuentro muy bonitas.

Despite being a duck without flashy colors, I find them very pretty.

Por lo menos le ponen mucho intento para perpetuar la especie.

At least they put a lot of effort into perpetuating the species.

Esperemos que ocurra lo mismo que con la malvasía cabeciblanca (Oxyura leucocephala) y no dentro de muchos años veamos a esta especié recuperada.

Let's hope that the same thing happens as with the White-headed Duck and not in many years we will see this species recovered.

Las malvasías cabeciblancas (Oxyura leucocephala) buceaban muy cerca del observatorio.

White-headed Ducks dived very close to the observatory.

Un macho. Siempre me llama la atención la forma y el color del pico de estas aves en periodo nupcial.

A male. I am always struck by the shape and color of the beak of these birds during the reproductive period.

Hembra.

Female.

Otra belleza en plumaje nupcial es el zampullín cuellinegro (Podiceps nigricollis).

Another beauty in breeding plumage is the Black-necked Grebe.

En esta especie no existen unas diferencias notorias de coloración entre los machos y las hembras. Es decir, carecen de dimorfismo sexual.

In this species there are no noticeable differences in coloration between males and females. That is, they lack sexual dimorphism.

A propósito del dimorfismo sexual, en los porrones europeos (Aythya ferina) el dimorfismo es notorio. El macho es el ejemplar de la derecha.

Regarding sexual dimorphism, in Common Pochard dimorphism is notorious. The male is the specimen on the right.

Hembra.

Female.

Había bastantes gaviotas reidoras (Chroicocephalus ridibundus).

There were quite a few Black-headed Gulls.

Y también bastantes gaviotas sombrías (Larus fuscus).

And also quite a few Lesser Black Gulls.

Una hembra y dos machos de ánade friso (Anas strepera). Los machos son los que tienen los colores más llamativos como suele ocurrir en las especies en las que está presente el dimorfismo sexual.

A female and two male Gadwall. Males are the ones with the most striking colors, as is usually the case in species in which sexual dimorphism is present.

Macho de pato colorado (Netta rufina).

Male Red-crested Pochard.

También abundaban los elegantes flamencos comunes (Phoenicopterus ruber) que de común solo tienen el nombre pues son muy bonitos.

The elegant Greater Flamingos were also abundant.

Un macho de tarro blanco (Tadorna tadorna).

A male Common Shelduck.

Había dos zarapitos reales (Numenius arquata).

There were two Eurasian Curlew.

Un bando de recién llegadas pagazas piconegras (Gelochelidon nilotica).

A flock of recently arrived Gull-billed Tern.

En el camino de ida hacia la casi seca laguna de Navaseca, tuvimos la suerte de ver a dos inmaduros de águila imperial ibérica (Aquila adalberti).

On the way to the almost dry Navaseca lagoon, we were lucky to see two immature Spanish Imperial Eagle.

Que pena da ver un humedal que se está secando, máxime, si es por la actuación indebida del hombre. Es una de las lagunas y humedales que integran la Reserva de la Biosfera “Mancha Húmeda”. Como se que esta laguna recibe agua de la depuradora de aguas, me ha extrañado que se haya secado este año. Uno de los participantes de la excursión, se puso en contacto con el ayuntamiento de Daimiel y le dijeron que se ha autorizado a los agricultores a extraer agua de la laguna. Me parece increible que hayan autorizado tal barbaridad cuando, además de tener una figura de protección, contaba con una de las mayores poblaciones de la escasa malvasía cabeciblanca (Oxyura leucocephala) sin despreciar otras muchas aves que ya no se van a poder reproducir pues la vegetación de carrizos y eneas ya está muerta. Increíble.

What a pity it is to see a wetland that is drying up, especially if it is due to man action. It is one of the lagoons and wetlands that make up the “Mancha Húmeda” Biosphere Reserve. As I know that this lagoon receives water from the water treatment plant, I was surprised that it has dried up this year. One of the tour participants contacted the Daimiel town hall and was told that farmers have been authorized to take water from the lagoon. I find it incredible that they authorized such barbarity when, in addition to having a protection figure, it had one of the largest populations of the rare White-headed Duck without neglecting many other Birds that are no longer going to be able to reproduce here because reed vegetation is already dead. It is unbelievable.

Los primeros abejarucos europeos (Merops apiaster) que veía esta temporada en España.

The first European bee-eaters that I saw this season in Spain.

Al haber poca agua y bastante fango, pudimos contemplar muchas especies de aves limícolas en paso prenupcial como es el caso de este combatiente (Calidris pugnax).

As there was little water and plenty of mud, we were able to see many species of waders in prenuptial migration, such as this Ruff.

7 de abril:

April 7th:

En esta excursión privada, no saque tantas fotos como en la anterior pues ya tenía fotos de las mismas especies de la excursión anterior. Además en vez de acabar en la laguna de Navaseca, decidí ir a ver la laguna del Pueblo en Pedro Muñoz y la Laguna de Manjavacas en Mota del Cuervo.

In this private trip, I do not take as many photos as in the previous one because I had photos of the same species. Also, instead of ending up in the Navaseca lagoon, I decided to visit Laguna del Pueblo in Pedro Muñoz and Manjavacas lagoon in Mota del Cuervo.

Como los clientes no habían visto nunca avutardas euroasiáticas (Otis tarda), dediqué la primer parte del día a localizarlas y enseñarles como hacían la rueda los grandes machos.

Since thesse clients had never seen Great Bustards before, I spent the first part of the day locating them and showing them how the big males display.

Tuvimos suerte y contemplamos varios machos haciendo la rueda.

We were lucky and we spot several males displaying.

Me gustó mucho este grupo de cigüeñuelas comunes (Himantopus himantopus).

I really liked this group of Black-winged Stilt.

Una especie que no pudimos ver en la excursión anterior fue la ganga ortega (Pterocles orientalis) y eso que estuvimos en el mismo sitio y a la misma hora.

A species that we did not see on the previous excursion was the Black-bellied Sandgrouse and we were in the same place and at the same time.

Pagaza piconegra (Gelochelidon nilotica).

Gull-billed Tern.

Un trío de ánsares comunes (Anser anser).

A trio of Greylag Geese.

Al igual que los zampullines cuellinegros (Podiceps nigricollis), los zampullines comunes (Tachybaptus ruficollis) estaban con su bonito plumaje nupcial.

Like Black-necked Grebes, Little Grebe were in their beautiful breeding plumage.

También vimos muchos aguiluchos laguneros occidentales (Circus aeruginosus). En las fotos un macho que pasó cerca de uno de los observatorios.

We also saw many Eurasian Marsh Harrier. In the photos a male that passed near one of the observatories.

Había dos machos de cerceta carretona (Anas querquedula). A los dos machos se les puede ver detrás de la vegetación que hay en el centro de la foto.

There were two male Garganey. The two males can be seen behind the vegetation in the center of the photo.

En esta se ve a uno de ellos un poco mejor.

In this one you can see one of them a little better.

Un bonito grupo de tarro blanco (Tadorna tadorna) y avoceta común (Recurvirostra avosetta).

A nice flock of Common Shelduck and Pied Avocet.

En un momento dado, pudimos contemplar a muchos fumareles cariblancos (Chlidonias hybridus) en vuelo buscando y cazando insectos.

At one point, we were able to see many Whiskered Tern in flight looking for and hunting insects.

Y con ellos también andaban a la caza de insectos bastantes canasteras comunes (Glareola pratincola).

And with them, quite a few Collared Pratincole also went looking for insects.

A los clientes les apeteció parar para visitar los molinos de viento de Campo de Criptana.

The clients wanted to make a short visit to the  windmills of Campo de Criptana.

En el parking pude fotografiar a esta confiada cogujada común (Galerida cristata).

In the parking lot I was able to photograph this tame, Crested Lark.

En esta foto podéis ver a un macho de combatiente (Calidris pugnax) que ya empezaba a tener parte del plumaje nupcial. En este individuo se ve que va a predominar el blanco. A continuación os dejo una foto de lo bonitos que se ponen en plumaje nupcial. Las otras dos aves son andarríos bastados (Tringa glareola).

In this photo you can see a male Ruff that was already beginning to have part of its breeding plumage. In this individual it is seen that white will predominate. I put a photo below of how beautiful they get in nuptial plumage. The other two birds are Wood Sandpiper.

Ya me queda poco para ir a nuestro viaje a la península de Varanger, Noruega, para ver un año más esta maravilla de aves con sus plumajes nupciales en sus leek.

I have little left to go on our trip to the Varanger peninsula, Norway, to see one more year this marvelous bird with its nuptial plumage in its leek.

Lo más destacado en la laguna de Manjavacas, fue este flamenco enano (Phoenicopterus minor) que andaba por allí. Se le distingue muy bien de los otros flamencos al tener un color mucho más rosa y ser de menor tamaño. Una pena que estuviese tan alejado.

The highlight in the Manjavacas lagoon was this Lesser Flamingo that was hanging around. It is very well distinguished from the other Flamingos, having a much pinker color and being smaller. A pity it was so far away.

En el vídeo se le puede ver un poco mejor, sobre todo su intenso color rosa.

In the video you can see it a bit better, especially its intense pink color.

Y para finalizar, he puesto esta foto de un archibebe oscuro (Tringa erythropus) con bastante plumaje nupcial. Los otros que vimos estaban con plumaje de invierno, mucho menos llamativo que este.

And to finish, I have put this photo of a Spotted Redshank with quite a lot of breeding plumage. The others we saw were in winter plumage, much less conspicuous than this one.
