Este blog es de nuestro viaje organizado del 19 al 20 de febrero para ver la migración prenupcial de las grullas comunes (Grus grus) a su paso la Laguna de Gallocanta.
This post is about our organized trip from February 19 to 20 to watch the prenuptial migration of the Common Cranes as they pass through the Gallocanta Lagoon.

El Gobierno de Aragón realiza un censo de las grullas comunes (Grus grus) a su paso por la Laguna de Gallocanta y en el censo del jueves antes de la excursión se contabilizaron 111.110 ejemplares. Una cifra muy elevada. Para más información podéis pinchar en el siguiente enlace: Migración de las grullas comunes en Gallocanta. En este enlace podéis ver desde la temporada 2005/2006 hasta la actual 2021/2022.
The Government of Aragon carries out a census of the Common Cranes as they pass through the Gallocanta Lagoon and in the census of Thursday before the trip, 111,110 specimens were counted. A very high figure. For more information you can click on the following link: Migration of the common cranes in Gallocanta. In this link you can see from the 2005/2006 season to the current 2021/2022.

Como las grullas no suelen empezar a llegar a la laguna hasta las tres de la tarde, y para hacer el viaje más cómodo, fuimos primero a visitar el cañón del río Dulce a su paso por Peregrina.
Since Cranes do not usually start arriving at the lagoon until three pm, and to make the trip more comfortable, we first went to visit the Dulce River canyon as it passes through Peregrina.

El día no era nada bueno pues había muchas nubes y la temperatura era bastante baja. El sitio es muy bonito y merece la pena visitarlo.

The day was not good at all because there were many clouds and the temperature was quite low. The place is very beautiful and worth a visit.

Ya en la senda, empezamos a ver las primera aves. En la foto un grupo de serines verdecillos (Serinus serinus).

Already on the path, we begin to spot the first Birds. In the photo a group of European Serin.

Y también algunos escribanos montesinos (Emberiza cia).

And also some Rock Buntings.

Muy bonito lugar.

A very beautiful place.

Trepador azul (Sitta europaea).

European Nuthatch.

Un bonito paso sobre el río Dulce.

A nice step over Rio Dulce.

Un macho de pinzón vulgar (Fringilla coelebs).

También pudimos ver varias chovas piquirrojas (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax).

We were also able to see several Red-billed Choughs.

Pero la especia mas abundante eran los buitres leonados (Gyps fulvus).

But the most abundant species was Griffon Vulture. 

Pudimos ver algunos nidos.

We were able to spot some nests.

También observamos varios machos de roquero solitario (Monticola solitarius). Por desgracia todos muy lejos.

We also observed several male Blue Rock Thrush. Unfortunately all very far.

Y antes de ir a la Laguna de Gallocanta hicimos una parada en el observatorio dedicado a Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente.

And before going to Gallocanta Lagoon we made a stop at the observatory dedicated to Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente.

Sobre las 2 de la tarde paramos a comer en la laguna de la Zaida. Desde hace bastantes años que no veo esta laguna con agua. Solo tenia un charco en medio.

Around 2 in the afternoon we stopped to eat at the Zaida Lagoon. I have not seen this lagoon with water for many years. It just had a puddle in the middle.

Después, llegamos a la laguna de Gallocanta. Tenía más agua que la que yo esperaba.

Later, we arrive at the Gallocanta Lagoon. It had more water than I expected.

Mientras averiguaba la tendencia de la llegada de las grullas comunes (Grus grus) a la laguna, les hice un recorrido por los caminos que la rodean para que se pudiesen hacer una idea de sus dimensiones. Enseguida pudimos verlas. En la foto una pareja con la cría del año pasado en medio.

While I was finding out the trend of the arrival of the Common Cranes to the lagoon, I took them on a tour of the paths that surround it so that they could get an idea of its dimensions. We were able to see them right away. In the photo a couple with last year's juvenile in the middle.

Un adulto delante y un inmaduro detrás. Los padres y las crías del año hacen la migración postnupcial y la prenupcial acompañados y protegidos por sus padres. Al llegar a sus sitios de reproducción las se separan pues tienen que ocuparse de la reproducción de ese año.

An adult in front and an immature behind. Parents and offspring of the year make the postnuptial and prenuptial migration accompanied and protected by their parents. When they arrive at their breeding pñace they are separated as they have to deal with that year's breeding.

Había muchas.

There were many.

En este video podéis ver cuantas había en este lugar concreto aunque no se concentran en un único sitio de la laguna.

In this video you can see how many there were in this specific place, although they are not concentrated in a single place in the lagoon.

Esta tarde, creo que debido a las condiciones meteorológicas adversas durante la mañan,a no llegaron muchas grullas en migración.

This afternoon, I believe that due to the adverse weather conditions during the morning, not many migrating cranes arrived.

Pero pasamos la  tarde viendo las especies de aves acuáticas que había en la laguna, que eran muchas y de diversas especies.

But we spent the afternoon seeing the species of aquatic Birds that were in the lagoon, which were many and of various species.

Los atardeceres en la laguna son espectaculares.

Sunsets in the lagoon are spectacular.

Siempre me llama la atención que, además de la belleza de los atardeceres, el reclamo de las grullas es también sobrecogedor.

It always strikes me that, in addition to the beauty of the sunsets, the call of the Cranes is also overwhelming.

Al día siguiente, muy temprano llegamos a ver la salida de las grullas de la laguna. Hacía, como de costumbre un frío intenso, creo que el termómetro del coche marcaba -5ºC. Gracias a Dios que no hacía viento y como íbamos muy abrigados no pasamos mucho frío.

Next day, very early, we arrived to see Cranes leaving the lagoon. As usual it was  intensely cold, I think the car thermometer read -5ºC. Thank God it wasn't windy and since we were lots of warm clothes we didn't had too cold.

Este día las grullas también madrugaron y comenzaron a salir muy temprano. Fijaos que algunas de ellas, las más frioleras llevan sus patas recogidas debajo de su plumaje en lugar de extendidas.

This day Cranes also got up early and began to leave very early. Note that some of them,have their legs tucked under their plumage instead of extended.

Precioso amanecer.

Beautiful sunrise.

La helada fue muy intensa.

Frost was very intense.

Todo un espectáculo de luz color y sonido.

A whole show of light, color and sound.

Ya cuando salió el sol la temperatura subió y se nos quitó el frío.

When sun came out temperature rose and cold was gone.

Algunas aves se concentraban delante de donde nosotros estábamos.

Some Birds were concentrated in front of where we were.

Y otras continuaban pasando por encima nuestro.

And others continued to pass over us.

Cuando los clientes estaban satisfechos con lo que habíamos visto, regresamos al hotel para recoger las maletas y desayunar. Después del desayuno volvimos a dar vueltas alrededor de la laguna y visitamos varios de los observatorios que hay. En un camino cercano a la carretera, había una pareja de grullas comunes (Grus grus) con dos hijos del año anterior. En la foto uno de los progenitores.

When clients were satisfied with what we had seen, we returned to the hotel to collect our bags and have breakfast. After breakfast we went back around the lagoon and visited several observatories. On a path near the road there was a pair of Common Cranes with two offspring from the previous year. In the photo one of the parents.

Uno de los hijos de la primavera anterior. Las grullas forman parejas estables y en mayo - junio ponen solo dos huevos que incuban durante un mes y son incubados por ambos progenitores. Ambos padres se encargan del cuidado de los pollos hasta que regresan nuevamente a su lugar de cría.

One of the juveniles of the previous spring. Cranes form stable pairs and in May - June they lay only two eggs that incubate for a month and are incubated by both parents. Both adults take care of the chicks until they return to their breeding place again.

Vimos tres ejemplares de avutarda común (Otis tarda). En la foto el macho.

We saw three specimens of Great Bustard. In the photo the male.

Y en esta otra con las dos hembras.

And in this other one with the two females.

Vimos varios cuervos grandes (Corvus corax).

We saw several Common Raven.

Un gran bando de grullas comunes (Grus grus) descansando en la Laguna de la Zaida.

Después del almuerzo, nos pusimos a esperar la entrada de las grullas a la laguna. Este día si que hubo una migración muy activa. 

After lunch, we waited for Cranes to enter the lagoon. This day there was a very active migration.

Vinieron muchísimas.

Many came.

También había un grupo de flamencos comunes (Phoenicopterus ruber).

There was also a flock of Greater Flamingo.

Y muchas más grullas.

And many more Cranes.

Y cuando los clientes decidieron que ya habían disfrutado con la migración decidimos regresar a Madrid.

And when clients decided that they had already enjoyed the migration, we decided to return to Madrid.
