Hello again.

Como muchos de mis clientes no son españoles voy a intentar traducir mis entradas en Ingles pues los traductores no son excesivamente buenos y espero que ahora sea más fácil para ellos entender los blogs. Pido disculpas por adelantado por los errores que pueda cometer y espero que de ahora en adelante sea más fácil para los extranjeros su comprensión.

As many of my clients are not Spanish I will try to translate into English my blogs in order to be easier for you to understand them because translators are not good enought. I apologize in advance by the mistakes I might commit and I hope that from now on it will be easier for you to understand my posts.

En esta entrada os voy a mostrar algunas aves que no suelo ver por mis lugares habituales de pajareo pues no suelo ir por las costas atlánticas de la Península Ibérica. Este año decidimos pasar el fin de Año con toda la familia en Portugal, concretamente, en Cascais.

In this blog I will show you some birds species that I do not usually see because my birding places do not contemplate the Atlantic Coast of the Iberian Peninsula. This year we decided to receive the New Year with the whole family in Portugal, specifically in Cascais.

Aunque el tiempo no acompañó pues no paró de llover en los tres días que estuvimos yo tuve la suerte de encontrarme con algunas especies que hacía años que no veía. El objetivo del viaje era estar todos juntos a sí que no tuve mucha oportunidad de pajarear como Dios manda y solo me dediqué a ir con mi cámara y mis prismáticos en los desplazamientos que hicimos por esta maravillosa región.

Although weather was not good because it never stopped raining during the three days we were there I was lucky to observe some species that I have not seen for years. The purpose of the trip was to be all together so I did not have to many oportunities of birding and what I did was just go with my camera and my binoculars on the visits we made by this wonderful Country.

Como consecuencia del mal tiempo las fotos no son todo lo buenas que deberían ser en caso de haber tenido buen tiempo pero no obstante os las voy a mostrar.

Because of bad weather the photos are not as good as they should be if they have been taken with good light but nonetheless I'm going to show you some.

En un alto en el camino cuando nos dirigíamos a nuestro destino pude contemplar en el propio parking de la estación de servicio en la que nos detuvimos a un grupo de gorriones comunes (Passer domesticus). En la foto un macho.

In a stop along the way as we headed to our destination I could spot at the parking of the gas station a group of House Sparrow. In the photo a male.

También había algunos jilgueros europeos (Carduelis carduelis).

There were also some Goldfinches.

Así como algunos trigueros (Miliaria calandra).

As well as some Corn Bunting.

Los aloes candelabro (Aloe arborescens) estaban en flor.

Aloe candelabra were in bloom.

También había un grupo de bisbitas pratenses (Anthus pratensis).

There was also a group of Meadow Pipit.

Algunas cigüeñas blancas (Ciconia ciconia) sobrevolaban el parking.

Some White Storks were flying over the parking.

Todavía se podían ver algunos higos chumbos en las chumberas (Opuntia ficus-indica).

You could still see some Indian figs.

Ya en Cascais nos dimos una vuelta por la playa y vimos este grupo de gaviotas sombrías (Larus fuscus) que resultó ser la especie más abundante de las observadas.

Already in Cascais we walked by the beach and saw this group of Lesser Black-backed Gull which was the most abundant species observed.

Y en menor número gaviotas patiamarillas (Larus cachinnans).

And very few Yellow-legged Gull.

Este fue el único charran patinegro (Sterna sandvicensis) que vi en todo el viaje.

This was the only Sandwich Tern I saw on the whole trip.

Y también este fue el único correlimos oscuro (Calidris maritima) que observé.

And this was the only Purple Sandpiper I observed.

Sin embargo pude contemplar varios alcatraces atlánticos (Morus bassanus).

But I beheld several Northern Gannets.

Desde mi terraza podía ver como las currucas cabecinegras (Sylvia melanocephala) acudían a los aloes candelabro (Aloe arborescens).

From my balcony I could see some Sardinian Warblers came to the Aloe Candelabra.

Al día siguiente nos fuimos a visitar Lisboa y vi varias gaviotas cabecinegras (Larus melanocephalus).

Next day we went to visit Lisbon and saw several Mediterranian Gulls.

Los confiados vuelvepiedras comunes (Arenaria interpres) estaban por todos lados. Fue la especie de limícolas más abundante y pude observar como bastante de ellos tenían alguna pata dañada como el de la foto que le faltan los dedos de una pata.

The unsuspecting Turnstones were everywhere. They were the most abundant specie of Limicola and I could see how some of them were suffering of foot damage as the one of the photo missing the fingers of a leg.

También había bastantes gaviotas reidoras (Chroicocephalus ridibundus).

There were also quite a few Black-headed Gulls.

Esta garza real (Ardea cinerea) estaba pescando muy cerca de la orilla enfrente de la Praça do Comércio.

This Grey Heron was fishing near the shore opposite the Praça do Comércio.

Y no muy lejos suyo descansaba este cormorán grande (Phalacrocorax carbo).

And not far from it this great cormorant was resting.

Después de un descanso para secarnos en una cafetería pusimos rumbo a la parte alta de la ciudad para disfrutar de las vistas de la ciudad. En el Jardim de Sao Pedro de Alcântara me llamaron al atención un bando de cotorras de kramer (Psittacula krameri) que se alimentaban de los frutos de los almeces (Celtis australis). Un macho adulto.

After a break to dry off in a cafe we headed to the top of the City to enjoy the sights from there. In the Jardim de Sao Pedro de Alcântara called my eye a bunch of Rose-ringed Parakeet feeding on the fruits of the European Hackberry. Adult male.

Hembra adulta.

Adult female.

De regreso al puerto me llamó la atención este joven de gavión atlántico (Larus marinus).

Returning to the port this young Great Black-backed Gull catch my attention.

Al igual que en Cascais, la gaviota más abundante era la sombría (Larus fuscus).

As in Cascais, the most abundant gull was the Lesser Black-backed.

Aunque también había algunas patiamarillas (Larus cachinnans).

Although there were some Yellow-legged Gulls. 

En el agua me sorprendió ver este gran ejemplar de medusa Catostylus tagi.

In the water I was surprised to see this great specimen of Blue and White Catostylus tagi jellyfish.

Y antes de coger el tren de regreso a Cascais aun disfruté de este trío de vuelvepiedras comunes (Arenaria interpres).

And before catching the train back to Cascais I enjoyed this trio of Turnstone.

A la mañana siguiente nuestro plan era visitar Sintra. Aunque era Año Nuevo yo madrugué para darme un paseo por los alrededores del hotel. Lo primero que me encontré fue este mosquitero común (Phylloscopus collybita).

Next morning our plan was to visit Sintra. Although it was New Year I got up early to give a walk around the Hotel. The first thing I found was this Chiffchaff.

Y vi varios alcatraces atlanticos (Morus bassanus).

And I saw several Northern Gannets.

Nada mal para empezar el año. Este colimbo grande (Gavia immer) me sorprendió con sus zambullidas en busca de alimento.

Not bad to start this year. This Great Northern Loon surprised me with its dives in search of food.

También pude observar varios vuelvepiedras comunes (Arenaria interpres).

I also observed several Turnstone.

Y varios correlimos tridáctilos (Calidris alba).

And several Sanderlings.

Y una sola gaviota patiamarilla (Larus cachinnans).

And a single Yellow-legged Gull.

En cuanto llegamos a Sintra y después de un paseo por esta bella villa acudimos a la Quinta da Regaleira que posee unos jardines dignos de visitar. En la propia entrada de los jardines había un grupo de aloes candelabro (Aloe arborescens) en flor.

Once we arrived at Sintra and made a walk through this beautiful town we went to the Quinta da Regaleira which has a garden worth visiting. At the very entrance of the gardens there was a group of Aloe Candelabra in bloom.

Los helechos arbóreos (Cyathea arborea) ya estaban brotando.

Tree Ferns were already sprouting.

Al igual que muchas camelias (Camellia Japonica) en distintos colores.

Like many camellias in different colors.

Una bonita flor ave del paraíso (Strelitzia reginae).

A pretty Bird of Paradise Flower.

Después nos acercamos a la costa para ver como estaba el mar. La verdad es que la altura de las olas asustaba y parecía que se iban a salir de la playa.

Then we head to the coast to check how was the sea. The truth is that the wave height scared us and seemed they were going to overflow the beach.

Antes de regresar a Madrid, mientras toda la familia estaba haciendo las maletas, y a pesar de la gripe que había cogido el día de Noche Vieja aun tuve tiempo de sacar unas fotos al colimbo grande (Gavia immer) que seguía por los alrededores del hotel.

Before returning to Madrid, while the whole family was packing, and despite the flu that I had taken in the New Year´s Eve I even had time to take some pictures of the  Great Northern Loon  that was still close by the Hotel.

Y también había varios alcatraces atlánticos (Morus bassanus) que estaban haciendo picados en el mismo puerto y no muy lejos de donde me encontraba.

And there were several Northern Gannets making dives at the port and not far from where I was.

Algunas fotos más de esta maravilla que no puedo observar con frecuencia, el colimbo grande (Gavia immer).

Some more photos of this beauty that I don´t see quite often, the Great Northern Loon.

Espero que os haya gustado esta entrada pues para mi ha sido muy gratificante ver cuatro especies que no tengo la suerte de ver muy a menudo al vivir muy alejado de la costa atlántica.

I hope you have liked this post because it has been very rewarding to me to see four species that I have no chance to observe very often when living far away from the Atlantic Coast.
