Hello again.

Como todos los años a finales de febrero me gusta ir a la Laguna de El Hito, Cuenca, para despedirme de las grullas comunes (Grus grus) hasta el próximo otoño. No todos los años hay el mismo numero de ejemplares y si no hay agua no acuden a concentrarse para su migración prenupcial. Este año hay bastante agua y además de las grullas había muchas otras aves acuáticas compartiendo la laguna. Incluso había cuatro flamencos comunes (Phoenicopterus ruber).

Every year in late February I like to go to Laguna El Hito, Cuenca, to say goodbye to the Common Cranes until next fall. Not every year there is the same number of them and if there is no water they do not come to congregate here for its spring migration. This year there is plenty of water and among cranes were many other waterfowl sharing the lagoon iIncluding four flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber).

Además de la población invernante, las que van de paso hacia el Norte suelen llegar por la tarde y en esta época se incrementa bastante su número. Por ello cedimos pasarnos antes por algunas de las lagunas Manchegas a ver que tal estaban y si ya habían comenzado a llegar algunas limícolas.

In addition to the wintering population at this time of the year their number increases due to the ones who go North. As the best time to see them arriving is in the afternoon we decided to go first to some of La Mancha Wetlands to see if some limicolae have already arrived.

Nuestro primer destino fue la laguna Grande de Villafranca de los Caballeros que como de costumbre estaba llena de fochas comunes (Fulica atra). También había algunos patos colorados (Netta rufina) como el macho de la foto.

Our first destination was the Laguna Grande of Villafranca de los Caballeros which as usually was full of Common Coots. There were also some Red-crested Pochard as the male of the photo.

En los tarayes (Tamaris gallica) que bordean la laguna se podían ver algunos fringílidos como esta hembra de verderón común (Carduelis chloris).

On the Tamarisks Trees bordering the lagoon it could be seen some Fringillidae like this Greenfinch female.

También se podían observar algunos zampullines comunes (Tachybaptus ruficollis).

It could be also observe some Little Grebes.

Y de camino a la Laguna Chica vimos a un grupo de trigueros (Miliaria calandra).

And on the way to Laguna Chica we saw a group of Corn Buntings.

Había muchos aguiluchos laguneros occidentales (Circus aeruginosus) sobrevolando los carrizos. En la foto una hembra.

There were many Eurasian Marsh Harriers flying over the reeds. In the picture a female.

Esta pareja de somormujos lavancos (Podiceps cristatus) estaban en pleno cortejo nupcial.

This pair of Great Crested Grebes were making their courship display.

Luego nos dirigimos a la cercana laguna de Camino a Villafranca del complejo Lagunaar de Alcazar de San Juan. Enseguida nos dimos cuenta que había más flamencos comunes (Phoenicopterus ruber) que en mi última visita.

We then headed to the nearby lagoon  De Camino a Villafranca belonging to the Complex of Lagoons of Alcazar de San Juan. We soon realized that there were more Greater Flamingos than in my last visit.

Las cigüeñuelas comunes (Himantopus himantopus) ya estaban copulando y en la margen derecha de la foto tres combatientes (Philomachus pugnax).

Black-winged Stilts were already mating and in the right margin of the photo three Ruffs.

Esta fue la única aguja colinegra (Limosa limosa) que vimos.

This was the only Black-tailed Godwit we saw.

Al ver este grupo de grullas comunes (Grus grus) pensamos que la tarde sería, cuando menos, divertida en la laguna de El Hito.

Seeing this group of Common Cranes we thought that in the afternoon we would have fun in the lagoon of El Hito.

Una bonita hembra de cigüeñuela común (Himantopus himantopus).

A pretty Black-winged Stilt female.

La laguna de La Veguilla era la que más aves albergaba. Había bastantes grupos de flamencos comunes (Phoenicopterus ruber).

La Laguna de La Veguilla was the one who house most birds. There were quite a few groups of Greater Flamingos.

También había algunos zampullines comunes (Tachybaptus ruficollis).

There were also some Little Grebes.

En el centro de esta isleta había dos ánsares comunes (Anser anser).

In the center of this islet were two Greylag Geese.

Y en esta otra un cormorán grade (Phalacrocorax carbo).

And in this one a Great  Cormorant.

Los aguiluchos laguneros occidentales (Circus aeruginosus) estaban muy activos. En la foto un macho adulto.

.Eurasian Marsh Harriers were very active. The photo shows an adult male.

Delante de los flamencos comunes (Phoenicopterus ruber) estaban este grupo de ánades rabudos (Anas acuta) compuesto por cuatro machos y una hembra.

In front of the Greater Flamingos was this group of Pintails composed by four males and a female.

También había porrones europeos (Aythya ferina).

There were also Common Pochards.

Otro macho adulto de aguilucho lagunero occidental (Circus aeruginosus).

Algunos flamencos comunes (Phoenicopterus ruber) se trasladaban de una laguna a otra.

Some Greater Flamingos were flying from one lagoon to another.

Otro de los habitantes de la Laguna un macho de malvasía cabeciblanca (Oxyura leucocephala).

Another of the inhabitants of the Lagoon a male of White-headed Duck.

Y en esta otra foto una hembra de la misma especie.

And in this shot a female of the same specie.

También estaban presentes las cercetas comunes (Anas crecca). En la foto un macho.

Common Teal were also present. In the photo a male.

Algunos de los zampullines cuiellinegros (Podiceps nigricollis) ya tenían el plumaje nupcial.

Some Black-necked Grebes were in breeding plumage.

Este otro continuaba con su plumaje de invierno.

This one continued with his winter plumage.

Una de las especies más abundantes eran las cucharas comunes (Anas clypeata).

One of the most abundant species were the Northern Shovelers.

Y también había algunas fochas comunes (Fulica atra).

And there were some Common Coots.

Entre la vegetación palustre se alimentaban bastantes mosquiteros comunes (Phylloscopus collybita). En este mismo sitio apareció un macho de bigotudo (Panurus biarmicus) que solo vi durante un instante.

Among the marsh vegetation were many Chiffchaffs feeding. In this same place appeared a Bearded Tit male that I saw just a moment.

Otra de las aves que vimos fue este bisbita alpino (Anthus spinoletta).

Another bird we saw was this Water Pipit.

Antes de nuestro destino final decidimos pasarnos por el Complejo Lagunar de Manjavacas y vimos a este grupo de correlimos comunes (Calidris alpina) y en primer plano estos dos chorlitejos patinegros (Charadrius alexandrinus).

Before our final destination we decided to have a look at the Complejo Lagunar de Manjavacas and we saw this group of Dunlins and in the foreground two Kentish Plover.

Y estos dos correlimos menudos (Calidris minuta) estaban junto a esta lavandera blanca (Motacilla alba).

And these two Little Stint were next to this White Wagtail.

Algunas grullas comunes (Grus grus) estaban en la zona de los carrizos de la Laguna.

Some Common Cranes were in the reeds area of the lagoon.

También había algunos grupos de pardillos comunes (Carduelis cannabina) que se notaba que los machos ya han comenzado con su muda nupcial.

There were also some groups of Linnets that you could tell the males because they have already begun molting to breeding plumage.

Ya se notaba que habían llegado más flamencos comunes (Phoenicopterus ruber) a Manjavacas. Este pequeño grupo estuvo realizando la danza nupcial durante un rato. Esperemos que este año se puedan volver a reproducir en esta laguna.

You could tell they had come more Greater Flamingos at Manjavacas. This small group was doing the mating dance for a while. Hopefully this year they will reproduce again at this Lagoon.

Cuando llegamos a la Laguna de El Hito nos llamó la atención la cantidad de calandrias (Melanocorypha calandra) que había por los sembrados.

When we reached the Laguna El Hito caught our attention the amount of Calandra Larks who were in the fields.

Una vista de la laguna que esta dividida en dos partes. En la foto la del sureste de mayor tamaño.

Y en esta otra la que mira al noreste. En años muy lluviosos se convierte en una sola.

And this the one which look to the northeast. In very wet years it becomes one.

Enseguida comenzaron a llegar grullas comunes (Grus grus) aunque en la laguna ya había bastantes.

Soon began to arrive Common Cranes at the Lagoon although there were already many.

También había cuatro flamencos comunes (Phoenicopterus ruber).

There were also four Greater Flamingos.

Y muchos tarros blancos (Tadorna tadorna).

And many Common Shelducks.

En esta foto he contado 56 y había bastantes más por otros lados de la laguna.

In this photo I have counted 56 and there were plenty more on other sides of the Lagoon.

Y como destacables también la cantidad de cercetas comunes (Anas crecca).

And also outstanding the number of Common Teals.

Este par de personas tienen muy poca educación y conciencia pues habían rebasado el límite de acercamiento a la Reserva y se dieron un paseo por zona protegida. Mucho les queda a algunos por aprender a respetar las zonas protegidas y más en un momento como este en el que las grullas llegan agotadas del sur para reponer fuerzas y lograr culminar su migración haciendo algunas paradas como es el caso de esta laguna. La verdad es que he tomado una foto de la matrícula pero no he querido publicarla para no meterme en jaleos pues luego el que puede tener problemas es el que suscribe y no los que les importa muy poco la naturaleza en general e infringen las leyes. Al final opté por irme y no pensar más en ellos para que no me arruinasen la tarde.

This pair of people have very little education and awareness as they had exceeded the limit of approach to the Reserve and were given a walk by the protected area. Much is left for some to learn and respect protected areas at a time like this where Common Cranes get tired from the South to regain strength and achieve their migration, with some stops such is this lagoon. The truth is that I've taken a picture of the license plate but did not want to publish it to avoid getting into trouble because then you can have problems and not to those who don´t care nature and violate laws. At the end I decided to go to another spot  and not think about them in order not to ruin the afternoon. 

Como hacia algo de viento las grullas comunes (Grus grus) venían muy altas y algunas veces se las oía pero no se veían a simple vista hasta que comenzaban su descenso a la Laguna.

Since there was windy some Common Cranes were coming very high and sometimes they were heard but not seen at first glance until they began its descent to the Lagoon.

En las fotos siguientes podéis ver la entrada que hubo esa tarde de estas magníficas aves y que no surcarán nuestro cielo hasta el otoño que viene. Es muy difícil plasmar la maravilla que supone este espectáculo de la naturaleza pero aun me parece estar oyéndolas. Al final de la tarde había varios miles en la laguna aunque no sabría decir cuantas.

In the following photos you can see the arrival of that afternoon of these magnificent birds and that there will not fly our sky until next fall. It is very difficult to capture the marvel involved in this spectacle of nature but still I seem to be hearing them. At the end of the afternoon there were several thousand in the Lagoon but I cannot guess how many.
