Esta vez os muestro lo que pudimos ver uno de nuestros viajes organizados de tres días al Parque Nacional de Picos de Europa a finales del mes de julio.

This time I show you what we could watched on one of our organized three-day trips to the Picos de Europa National Park at the end of July.

El objetivo de este viaje era poder ver, y en su caso fotografiar, aves alpinas con especial predilección por los treparriscos (Tichodroma muraria) y los gorriones alpinos (Montifringilla nivalis).

Target of this trip was to watch, and if possible photograph, Alpine Birds with a special predilection for Wallcreepers and Snowfinches.

Otro de los objetivos del viaje era poder hacer fotos nocturnas de la Vía Láctea y para ello habíamos elegido una fecha en la que había luna nueva para captar en su esplendor los cielos nocturnos de Picos de Europa.

Another of the objectives of the trip was to be able to take night photos of the Milky Way and for this we had chosen a date on which there was a new moon to capture in its splendor the night skies of Picos de Europa.

Este año el tiempo fue muy bueno durante los tres días que estuvimos en este precioso entorno que es Picos de Europa.

This year the weather was very good during the three days we were in this beautiful environment that is Picos de Europa.

El relato lo voy a hacer por cada día de la excursión para que podáis ver lo que pudimos observar en cada uno de ellos.

I will do the story for each day of the trip so you can see what we could watched each of them.

Como en otros años la estrella del viaje fue el treparriscos (Tichodroma muraria).

As in other years the star of the trip was the Wallcreeper.

5 de Julio:

July 5th:

Antes de llegar a Picos hicimos una parada en el observatorio de Piedrasluengas para contemplar el escenario donde íbamos a pasar los tres días siguientes. Fue una pena que hubiese tanta bruma. 

Before arriving at Picos we made a stop at the Piedrasluengas observatory to contemplate the stage where we were going to spend the next three days. It was a shame that sky where no very clear.

En él pudimos contemplar este ejemplar de alimoche común (Neophron percnopterus).

In it we could contemplate this specimen of Egyptian Vulture.

Después de subir en el teleférico, conocido como el cable, al piso alpino lo primero que me llamó la atención fue esta genciana (Gentiana acaulis).

After getting in the cable car to the alpine floor the first thing that caught my eye attention was this Gentian Trumpet.

Y enseguida comenzamos a disfrutar de los acentores alpinos (Prunella collaris).

And soon after we begin to enjoy the first Alpine Accentors.

Vimos varias parejas.

We saw several pairs.

Inclusive vimos a una cópula. En esta foto una hembra en posición.

We even saw a copulation. In this photo a female in position.

Bonitas aves.

Beautiful Birds.

Tampoco tardamos mucho en ver y fotografiar los primeros treparriscos (Tichodroma muraria).

Nor do we take long to see and photograph the first Wallcreeper.

Un momento inolvidable es su compañía.

An unforgettable moment watching them.

Después nos pusimos a la búsqueda del tercer ave que queríamos ver en esta altura. En el camino vimos varios rebecos cantábricos (Rupicapra pyrenaica parva).

Then we started looking for the third bird we wanted to see at this height. On the way we saw several Cantabrian Chamois.

Algunos casi recién nacidos pues a este le podía ver el cordón umbilical.

Some almost newborn because you can see its umbilical cord.

Aunque de lejos ya pudimos ver los primeros gorriones alpinos (Montifringilla nivalis).

Although from afar we could already see the first Snowfinches.

Un bonita ortiguera (Aglais urticae). 

A beautiful Small Tortoiseshell.

En nuestro camino hacia el Hotel, vimos también las primeras chovas piquirrojas (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax). También habíamos visto a las chovas piquigualdas (Pyrrhocorax graculus) pero no les había sacado fotos pues es un ave muy confiada y fácil de fotografiar.

On our way to the Hotel, we also saw the first Red-billed Chough. We had also seen Yellow-billed Chough but I had not taken any photos because it is a very confident bird and easy to photograph.

Algunos rebecos cantábricos (Rupicapra pyrenaica parva) más con sus crías.

No muy lejos de ellos había una familia de bisbita alpino (Anthus spinoletta). En la imagen un juvenil.

Not far from them was a family of Water Pipit. In the picture a juvenile.

También vimos una pareja de alimoches comunes (Neophron percnopterus).

We also saw a pair of Egyptian Vultures.

Y unos cuantos gorriones alpinos (Montifringilla nivalis) que nos rodearon para regocijo de los asistentes.

And a few Snowfinches that surrounded us to the delight of the customers.

Esta vez mucho más cercanos pero ya había poca luz pues Peña Vieja, una de las montañas del Macizo Central de Picos de Europa, pone en sombra el sitio por el que íbamos.

This time much closer but there was already little light because Peña Vieja, one of the mountains of the Massif Central of Picos de Europa, shadows the place we were going.

Les hicimos un buen book.

We made them a good book.

Ya podíamos ver el Hotel donde pasariamos las dos siguientes noches.

We could already see the Hotel where we would spend the next two nights.

Y otra pareja más ya muy cerca del hotel y realmente cerca nuestro.

And another pair already very close to the Hotel and really close to us.

Después de cenar y dado que el cielo estaba despejado nos dedicamos a hacer fotos nocturnas. La Vía Láctea en noches despejadas en Picos de Europa desde el hotel son inigualables.

After dinner and given that the sky was clear we dedicated ourselves to take night photos. The Milky Way on clear nights in Picos de Europa from the hotel are unmatched.

6 de Julio:

July 6th:

Como ya habíamos visto todas las especies alpinas que pretendíamos decidí que ibamos a pasar el día en alturas inferiores para poder observar otro tipo de especies que no habitan tan arriba. Antes de iniciar el descenso decidí probar a ver si veíamos con mejor luz algunas de las especies del día anterior.

As we had already seen all the planned Alpine Species, I decided that we would spend the day at lower heights to be able to observe other types of species that do not live so high. Before starting the descent I try to see if we can watch with better light some of the species of the previous day.

En la foto chova piquirroja (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax).

In the photo Red-billed Chough.

Macho de collalba gris (Oenanthe oenanthe).

Northern Wheatear Male.

Hembra.

Female.

Joven.

Juvenile.

Bisbita alpino (Anthus spinoletta).

Water Pipit.

Y los gorriones alpinos (Montifringilla nivalis) con mejor luz y cerca. No se puede pedir más.

And the Snowfinches with better light and close. You can not ask for more.

Por lo que pudimos ver este año iban más retrasados con la reproducción pues en los tres días no vimos ningún joven. Si vimos que ya debían haber nacido pues algunos estaban recogiendo insectos y los llevaban a sus pollos aun en los nidos.

From what we could see, this year they were more delayed with reproduction because in the three days we stayed we did not see any juvenile. Instead we saw that they should have been born because some adults were collecting insects and carrying them to their chicks in their nests.

Después del nuevo encuentro con los gorriones alpinos (Montifringilla nivalis) decidí tomar rumbo a otras zonas más bajas. En la foto un macho de colirrojo tizón (Phoenicurus ochruros).

After another meeting with the Snowfinches I decided to head to other lower areas. In the photo a male Black Redstart.

Hembra de pardillo común (Carduelis cannabina). No sabíamos por aquel entonces que durante el dçia podrçiamos hacer fotos a los bonitos machos de esta especie y que suelen ser muy reacios a quedarse cerca.

Female of Common Linnet. We did not know at that time that during the day we could take pictures of the beautiful males of this species that they are usually very reluctant to stay close.

Había bastantes ovejas en los campos cercanos a Igüedri.

There were quite a few sheep in the fields near Igüedri.

Siempre se ven algunos ejemplares de esta vaca que es de raza tudanca autóctona de Cantabria.

You always see some specimens of this cow that is native of Cantabria the Tudanca breed.

El primer macho de pardillo común (Carduelis cannabina) que pudimos fotografiar.  

The first male of  Common Linnet that we could photograph.

Chova piquigualda (Pyrrhocorax graculus).

Yellow-billed Chough.

Vimos la menos dos machos de roquero rojo (Monticola saxatilis).

We saw at least two Rock Thrush males.

Ya en la zona que limita el bosque comenzamos con la búsqueda de otras especies. En la foto un macho de tarabilla europea (Saxicola rubicola).

Already at the timberline we begin with the search for other species. In the photo a male Common Stonechat.

Joven.

Juvenile.

Hembra de alcaudón dorsirrojo (Lanius collurio). También vimos al macho pero no tuve tiempo de fotografiarlo.

Female of Red-backed Shrike. We also saw a male but I didn't have time to photograph him.

Curruca mosquitera (Sylvia borin).

Garden Warbler.

Había gran cantidad de plantas y flores. En la foto un bonito cardo azul (Eryngium bourgatii).

There were lots of plants and flowers. In the photo a nice Mediterranean Sea Holly. 

Lino viscoso (Linum viscosum).

Sticky Flax.

Bocado del diablo (Succisa Pratensis).

Devil's-bit

Cardo almizclero (Carduus nutans).

Musk Thistle.

También se podían observar bisbitas arbóreos (Anthus trivialis).

You could also see Tree Pipits.

Águila calzada (Aquila pennata) morfo claro.

Pale morph Booted Eagle.

Cuervo grande (Corvus corax).

Common Raven.

Algunas flores más. Lirio azul (Iris latifolia).

Dedalera común (Digitalis purpurea).

Common Foxglove.

Rampion de cabeza redonda (Phyteuma orbiculare).

Round-headed Rampion.

Gabardera (rosa pendulina).

Mountain Rose.

Calzas de lobo (Digitalis parviflora).

Small-Flowered Foxglove.

Genciana amarilla (Gentiana lutea). 

Great Yellow Gentian.

Otra de las aves que no se ven por el centro peninsular es el escribano cerillo (Emberiza citrinella).

Other Birds not seen by the Peninsular Center is the Yellowhammer.

Algunos estuvieron muy cerca.

Some were very close.

Todos lo vistos fueron machos.

All we saw were males.

Preciosa ave.

Beautiful Bird.

Como el día era caluroso y no llegamos temprano por la mañana las mariposas estaban muy activas lo que dificultó mucho que las pudiéramos fotografiar. En la foto una adipe (Argynnis adippe).

As the day was hot and we did not arrive early in the morning the butterflies were very active which made it very difficult for us to photograph them. In the photo a High Brown Fritillary.

Mi preferida de las mariposas españolas, la apolo (Parnassius apollo).

My favorite of the Spanish Butterfly, the Apollo.

Vanesa de los cardos (Cynthia cardui).

Painted Lady.

Macaón (Papilio machaon).

Swallowtail.

Este roquero rojo (Monticola saxatilis) estaba muy atareado recogiendo insectos para sus pollos.

This Rock Thrush was very busy collecting insects for his chicks.

Y por fin pudimos fotografiar bien a algunos pardillos comunes (Carduelis cannabina).

And finally we were able to photograph some male Common Linnet well.

Un acentor común (Prunella modularis) muy fotogénico.

A very photogenic Dunnock.

Me extrañó ver que algunos terneros no tenían puestas las marcas de haber pasado los controles veterinarios y por eso me dediqué a fotografiarlos pues son mucho más fotogénicos.

I was surprised to see that some calves did not have the marks of having passed the veterinary controls and that is why I decided to photograph them because they are much more photogenic.

Y para finalizar el día ya cuando llegábamos de nuevo al hotel vimos esta reunión de carneros.

And at the end of the day when we were arriving at the Hotel we saw this rams meeting.

7 de Julio:

July 7th:

Este último día lo pasamos nuevamente en el piso alpino. En la foto un macho de collalba gris (Oenanthe oenanthe).

We spent this last day again in the alpine floor. In the photo a male of Northern Wheatear.

Hembra.

Female.

Bisbita alpino (Anthus spinoletta).

Water Pipit.

En el camino vimos a este carnero que según nos contaron había sufrido un ataque el día anterior por los lobos. No se quien le atacaría pero tenía el cuello lleno de mordeduras.

On the way we saw this Ram who we were told he had suffered an attack the day before by the wolves. I don't know who would attack him but his neck was full of nibbles.

Algunos gorriones alpinos (Montifringilla nivalis) más.

Some more Snowfinch.

Ya hacía calor por la mañana y los rebecos cantábricos (Rupicapra pyrenaica parva) buscaban el alivio de la nieve.

It was already hot in the morning and the Cantabrian chamois  sought relief on the snow.

Y cuando íbamos hacia donde habíamos visto los trearrisos (Tichodroma muraria) el primer día este  quebrantahuesos (Gypaetus barbatus) echó por tierra nuestro objetivo.

And when we were going to where we had seen wallcreepers on the first day this Lammergeier shattered our objective.

El motivo, pues ver si lograba comer algo de lo que los buitres dejaran cuando terminaban esta carcasa de rebeco.

The reason, see if she managed to eat something that the vultures left when they finished this chamois carcass.

Se trata de una hembra nacida y liberada el año pasado de nombre Covadonga.

This is a female born and released last year named Covadonga.

Después de mucho rato observando la escena, Covadonga decidió que no tenía hambre pues no comió ningún hueso.

After a long time watching the scene, Covadonga decided that he was not hungry because she did not eat any bones.

O al menos decidió que comería más tarde.

Or at least he decided that she would eat later.

Por la zona había acentores alpinos (Prunella collaris).

In the area there were Alpine Accentors.

Buitres leonados (Gyps fulvus).

Griffon Vultures.

Un bonito macho de rebeco cantábrico (Rupicapra pyrenaica parva).

A beautiful male of Cantabrian Chamois.

Y también andaba por la zona este otro subadulto de quebrantahuesos (Gypaetus barbatus) que al no tener marcas alares no puedo comentaros nada de él.

And this other subadult of Lammergeier was also in the area, since It doesn't have any wing marks, I can't tell you anything about it.

Cuando regresábamos el hotel para coger el transporte que nos llevaría hasta el Cable para regresar a Madrid vimos bastantes chovas piquigualdas (Pyrrhocorax graculus). 

When we returned to the hotel to take the transport that would take us to the Cable to return to Madrid we saw quite a lot of Yellow-billed Chough.

Me había extrañado que este año las chovas piquigualdas (Pyrrhocorax graculus) no acudiesen tanto como otros años a comer la comida de los transeúntes que andan por el Parque y pudimos comprobar que se estaban atiborrando de la comida que los pastores dejan a los mastines que guardan los rebaños. Había comida por muchos sitios.

I had been surprised that this year Yellow-billed Chough did not go as much as other years to eat the food of people that walk through the Park and we could verify that they were eating the food that the shepherds leave to the mastiffs they keep the sheep flocks. There was food in many places.
