PAJAREANDO POR LAS LAGUNAS DE LA MANCHA, BIRDWATCHING LA MANGHA LAGOONS.

SPAIN BIRDING TRIPS, VIAJES DE BIRDING POR ESPAÑA.

Hoy os muestro algunas fotos de algunas de las aves que vimos en un viaje que hice a mediados de enero a la Mancha Húmeda.

Today I show you some pictures of some of the birds we saw on a trip I did in mid-January to La Mancha Wetlands.

El tiempo que nos acompañó no fue muy bueno, por ser optimista, y hacia bastante frío y viento. Solo lució el sol en algunos momentos.

The weather that accompanied us was not very good, to be optimistic. It was cold and windy. Sun shone only a few times.

Como comentario general de la visita he notado que hay menos anátidas que en años precedentes aunque de todos modos merece la pena visitar estas lagunas en cualquier época del año. Lo más destacable fue una concentración de patos colorados (Netta rufina). También pensé que iba a haber más agua en las lagunas después de las fuertes lluvias de diciembre y enero. Parecía que toda el agua estaba en los embarrados caminos.

As a general comment of the visit I have noticed that there were fewer ducks than in previous years but anyway worth visiting these lagoons in any season. The highlight was a concentration of Red-crested Pochard. I also thought that It would be more water in the lagoons after heavy rains in December and January. It seemed that all rain water was on the muddy trails.

Nuestro primer destino fue la Laguna Larga de Villacañas. Debido al mal estado de la pista que rodea el humedal no pudimos ver muchas aves. En la parte más cercana al Pueblo estaba este grupo de limícolas formado mayoritariamente por chorlitejos patinegros (Charadrius alexandrinus) dos andarríos chicos (Actitis hypoleucos) y un correlimos menudo (Calidris minuta).

Our first destination was the Laguna Larga of Villacañas. Due to the bad condition of the track surrounding the wetland  we did not see many birds. At the part closest to the Village was this group of Limicola made ​​up mostly by Kentish Plover, two Common Sandpipers and a Little Stint.

De camino a Alcazar de San Juan nos detuvimos un momento en la Laguna de Tirez. Lo más destacable eran los tarros blancos (Tadorna tadorna) que habría más de una treintena. También había algunas gaviotas reidoras (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) y sombrías (Larus fuscus). 

On our way to Alcazar de San Juan we stopped a moment in the Laguna de Tirez. Most notable were the Common Shelducks. There were over thirty. We also saw some Black-headed Gulls and Lesser Black-backed Gulls.

Cuando volvimos a la carretera nos encontramos con estas grullas comunes (Grus grus) que no pareció importarles nuestra cercanía.

When we returned to the road we find these Common Cranes that not seem to mind our closeness.

Al llegar a Villafranca de los Caballeros nos sorprendió la cantidad de fochas comunes (Fulica atra) que había en la laguna. Entre ellas había varias parejas de somormujos lavancos (Podiceps cristatus) aun con plumaje invernal.

Arriving at Villafranca de los Caballeros we were surprised the amount of Common Coots that were on the lagoon. Among them were several pairs of Great Crested Grebes with wintering plumage.

A si como algunas parejas de patos colorados (Netta rufina).

As well as several pairs of Red-crested Pochard.

Por las orillas de la laguna andaban varios bisbitas alpinos (Anthus spinoletta).

On the shores of the lagoon walked several Water Pipit.

Después decidí acercarnos a la Laguna Chica y vimos este precioso ejemplar de garceta grande (Egretta alba).

Then I decided to approach to the Laguna Chica and we saw this beautiful specimen of Great White Egret.

No muy lejos suyo nos encontramos con un nutrido bando de patos colorados (Netta rufina). No me atrevo a deciros cuantos ejemplares habría pero yo creo que sobrepasaban los 200. Fue el mejor momento del día y una sorpresa inesperada. 

Not far from it we find a large flock of Red-crested Pochard. I hesitate to tell you how many specimens were there but I would think that exceeded 200. It was the best time of the day and an unexpected surprise.

Acto seguido pusimos rumbo al Complejo Lagunar de Alcazar de San Juan. En nuestro camino y a contraluz vimos este alcaudón real (Lanius meridionalis).

Immediately afterwards we headed to The Complejo Lagunar de Alcazar de San Juan. On our way we saw with a backlighting this Southern Grey Shrike.

Accedimos al Complejo Lagunar por la Laguna de las Yeguas y este macho de aguilucho lagunero occidental (Circus aeruginosus) sobrevolaba la lámina de agua.

We accessed to the Complejo lagunar by The Laguna de las Yeguas and this Eurasian Marsh Harrier male was overflying water surface.

Las únicas aves que había en esta laguna era un grupo de nueve zarapitos reales (Numenius arquata). Estaban realmente esquivas.

The only birds that were on the lagoon was a group of nine Eurasian Curlews. They were really skittish.

En la laguna Del Camino a Villafranca había bastantes aves. En la imagen se puede apreciar un buen bando de tarros blancos (Tadorna tadorna), ánades frisos (Anas strepera), cercetas comunes (Anas crecca), correlimos menudos (Calidris minuta), cigüeñuelas comunes (Himantopus himantopus) y algunas gaviotas sombrías (Larus fuscus).

At the lagoon Del Camino a Villafranca there were several species of birds. In the photo you can see several of Common Shelducks, Gadwalls, Common Teals, Little Stints, Black-winged Stilts and some Lesser Black-backed Gulls.

Cuando nos dirigíamos a la Laguna de La Veguilla vimos un par de gallinetas comunes (Gallinula chloropus).

When we drove to the Laguna de La Veguilla we saw a couple of Moorhens.

Después nos pasamos por los tres observatorios de La Veguilla y aunque hacia bastante viento y frío pudimos ver en primer lugar a este bisbita alpino (Anthus spinoletta).

Then we went through the three observatories of the La Veguilla and although there was quite windy and cold we could see at first this Water Pipit.

También había varios ánsares comunes (Anser anser).

There were also several Greylag Geese.

Había un grupo de fochas comunes (Fulica atra) que se mantenía muy compacto. Me imagino que sería por que en otoño han retirado bastante carrizo y los aguiluchos laguneros occidentales (Circus aeruginosus) estaban al acecho.

There was a group of Common Coots which remained very compact. I imagine that the reason was because this autumn have been removed losts of reeds and Eurasian Marsh Harrier were lurking them.

También se podían observar algunas agachadizas comunes (Gallinago gallinago) en busca de alimento.

You could also observe some Common Snipe searching for food.

Este bonito calamón común (Porphyrio porphyrio) estaba entre los carrizos y salió un rato permitiéndonos disfrutar de él.

This beautiful Purple Swamp-hen was among the reeds and came out a while allowing us to enjoy it.

Esta pareja de ánades frisos (Anas strepera) se estaba echando una siesta.

This pair of Gadwalls was taking a siesta.

Había varias parejas de cercetas comunes (Anas crecca) aunque en este caso hay demasiados machos para una sola hembra.

There were several pairs of Common Teal but in this case there are too many males for a single female.

Así está mucho mejor.

That's much better.

En la parte superior de esta imagen se ven dos malvasías cabeciblancas (Oxyura leucocephala), porrones europeos hembra (Aythya ferina), ándes frisos (Anas strepera) y ánades reales (Anas platyrhynchos).

On top of this photo you see two White-headed Duck, European Pochard females,  Gadwalls and Mallards.

Solo vimos un par de andarríos grandes (Tringa ochropus).

We only saw a couple of Green Sandpiper.

Aunque había muchas cucharas comunes (Anas clypeata) la mayoría estaba al abrigo del viento y demasiado lejos para la cámara fotográfica.

Although there were many Northern Shoveler most were sheltered from the wind and too far away for my camera.

Algunos zampullines cuellinegros (Podiceps nigricollis) estaban cerca del observatorio y nos entretuvieron durante un buen rato.

Some Black-necked Grebe were close to the hide and entertained us for a while.

Otro bisbita alpino (Anthus spinoletta).

Another Water Pipit. 

Y también se veían algunas lavanderas blancas (Motacilla alba).

And some White Wagtail were also seen.

Aunque vimos bastantes aguiluchos laguneros occidentales (Circus aeruginosus) me pareció que había menos que en otros años. Quizá el viento hacia que estuviesen escondidos entre los carrizos.

Although we saw many Eurasian Marsh Harriers I found that there were less than in other years. Maybe the wind make them to be hidden among the reeds.

Como de costumbre se podían ver algunos flamencos comunes (Phoenicopterus ruber) en la Laguna.

As usual you could see some Geater Flamingos at the Lagoon.

Y un buen grupo de gaviotas sombrías (Larus fuscus).

And a group of Lesser Black-backed Gull.

Al poco rato el tiempo mejoró un poco y salió el sol. Mucho mejor luz para la observación y las fotografías. En la imagen un macho de tarro blanco (Tadorna tadorna).

After a while the weather improved a bit and the sun came out. Much better light for observation and photographs. In the picture a male shelduck.

Y como el tiempo iba pasando y aun quería ir a al Complejo Lagunas de Manjavacas recogimos nuestras bártulos y partimos. Pasamos por Pedro Muñoz pero no nos detuvimos mucho rato pues había muy poca agua y aves. Llegando a Manjavacas comenzamos a ver algunos grupos de grullas comunes (Grus grus) por los alrededores.

And as time was passing and still wanted to go to the Complejo Lagunar de Manjavacas we gathered our belongings and left. We went through to Pedro Muñoz  but we did not stop too long as there was very little water and birds. Reaching Manjavacas we start to see some groups of Common Cranes.

En la laguna de Manjavacas en una de sus isletas estaba este grupo de tarros blancos (Tadorna tadorna) y ánades reales (Anas platyrhynchos).

In one islet of Manjavacas lagoon was this group of Common Shelducks and Mallards.

Y no muy lejos suyo estaba este grupo de cucharas comunes (Anas clypeata).

And not far from them it was this group of Northern Shoveler.

También había unas cuantas gaviotas sombrías (Larus fuscus).

There were also a few Lesser Black-backed Gulls.

Un grupo de grullas comunes (Grus grus) se alimentaban en la orilla de los carrizos.

A group of Common Cranes was feeding on the edge of the reeds.

Como hacía bastante viento el trasiego de anátidas de un lado a otro de la laguna era continuo. En la foto un grupo de cucharas comunes (Anas clypeata).

As it was a windy day ducks were continuous racking side to side of the lagoon. The photo shows a group of Northern Shovelers.

Cuando nos dirigíamos al observatorio pudimos ver este par de zarapitos reales (Numenius arquata).

When we were going to the hide we saw this pair of Eurasian Curlews.

Había bastantes flamenco comunes (Phoenicopterus ruber) para esta época del año.

There were quite Geater Flamingos for this time of year.

Una bonita hembra de cernícalo vulgar (Falco tinnunculus) oteaba en busca de algo que comer.

A pretty Common Kestrel female was searching something to eat.

Ya con el sol escondiéndose y esperando a ver si observábamos algunas grullas comunes (Grus grus) llegar a la laguna para pasar la noche vimos esta paloma zurita (Columba oenas).

Now with the sun hiding and waiting to see if we could observe some Common Cranes reach the lagoon for the night we saw this Stock Dove.

La suerte nos acompañó y vimos algunos grupos entrando y con una luz preciosa.

We were lucky and we saw some groups arriving with a beautiful light.

En esta foto las grullas comunes (Grus grus) sobrevolando el Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Manjavacas.

In this photo common cranes flying over the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Manjavacas.

Y para finalizar este par de grupos que estaban aun alimentándose y que entraron a la Laguna aun más tarde cuando no había luz para sacarles fotos.

And to finish this pair of groups that were still feeding and entered the Laguna even later when there was no light to take pictures.
