Esta semana el blog es sobre aves esteparias. Para ello decidí ir a la Provincia de Toledo en su búsqueda.
This week the blog is about steppe birds. For this I decided to go to the Province of Toledo in his search.

Durante todo el día lució el sol y la temperatura fue muy agradable.

The sun shone all day and the temperature was very pleasant.

Lo que más me gustó de todo el día fue comprobar que los sisones comunes (Tetrax tetrax) ya han comenzado con sus concentraciones prenupciales. Aún tendrán que reunirse más ejemplares pero el mayor grupo que vimos ya sobrepasaba los 100.

What I liked most of the whole day was to verify that the Little Bustards have already started with their prenuptial concentrations. They will still have to gather more Birds but the largest flock we saw already exceeded 100.

Antes de llegar a nuestro destino tuvimos que pararnos pues un par de buitres negros (Aegypius monachus)  se levantaron de un campo cercano a la carretera y había un sitio donde parar para poder fotografiarlos. Aunque el tema era de esteparias, no me pude resistir a pararme. Este era uno de ellos.

Before arriving at our destiny we had to stop because a pair of Black Vultures took off from a field near the road and there was a place to stop to be able to photograph them. Although the target were Steppe Birds, I could not resist stopping. This was one of them.

Y este el otro. Fijáos que la mancha blanca en este individuo está en su ala izquierda y la del ave anterior está en su flanco derecho.

And this is the other one. Notice that the white spot on this individual is on his left wing and that of the previous Bird is on his right flank.

Otra más que para eso nos paramos. Son impresionantes.

Another because this was the reason why we stopped. They are awesome.

Ya en nuestro lugar de campeo vimos que había bastantes estorninos pintos (Sturnus vulgaris) comiendo en compañía de negros (Sturnus unicolor). Como estos últimos los veo en muchas ocasiones solo fotografié a los pintos.

Already in our selected place we saw that there were quite a few Common Starlings eating in the company of Spotless Starlings. As the latter I see them on many occasions I only photographed the Common Starlings.

Un año más los sisones comunes (Tetrax tetrax) habían comenzado a concentrarse en donde los años precedente.

One more year Little Bustards had begun to concentrate where the previous years.

Después de un buen rato observándoles, decidimos continuar a ver lo que podíamos observar. Lo primero que vimos fue a estas dos gangas ibéricas (Pterocles alchata).

After a good while watching them, we decided to continue to see what we could observe. The first thing we saw was this two Pin-tailed Sandgrouse.

Un un poco más adelante otro grupo pero en esta ocasión bastante más numeroso.

A little further another group but this time much more numerous.

Es un placer poder contemplar a estas aves y más cuando hay tantas.

It is a pleasure to be able to contemplate these birds and more when there are so many.

Me había extrañado no haber visto aun ninguna avutarda común (Otis tarda).

I had been surprised that I had not yet seen any Great Bustard.

De todos modos se suelen ver más ejemplares.

Anyway you usually see more specimens.

Vimos como este bonito bando de sisones comunes (Tetrax tetrax) llegaba y se posaba no muy lejos de donde estábamos.

We saw how this beautiful flock of Little Bustards arrived and landed not far from where we were.

Cogujada común (Galerida cristata).

Crested Lark.

Vimos muchas bisbitas pratenses (Anthus pratensis).

We saw many Meadow Pipit.

  

Son muy bonitas.

They are very beautiful.

Solo vimos estas dos grullas comunes (Grus grus) pero muy chillonas.

We only saw these two Common Cranes but very loud.

Después de dar bastantes vueltas por los carriles llegamos a donde parecía que estaban todas las avutardas comunes (Otis tarda). Primero vimos estas dos.

After going around the tracks a lot, we got to where it looked like all the Great Bustards were. First we saw these two.

Luego un grupo nos pasó volando.

Then a group flew by.

Siempre me impresiona ver lo bien que vuelan estas aves. Es el ave de mayor peso que vuela en Europa.

I am always impressed to see how well these birds fly. It is the heaviest bird that flies in Europe.

Y todo a base de una gran fuerza.

And all based on strength.

Y cuando coronamos una pequeña colina nos encontramos con un bando de más de 100 avutardas comunes (Otis tarda) pero no me cabían todas en la foto. Por eso no habíamos visto más durante la mañana.

And when we reached to a small hill we found a flock of more than 100 Great Bustards but I could not fit in the photo. That is why we had not seen more during the morning.

También vimos algunas perdices rojas (Alectoris rufa) pero no pude hacer mejor fotografías de ellas.

We also saw some Red-legged Partridges but I couldn't make better pictures of them.

Y antes de irnos decidimos ir a donde habíamos visto el mayor grupo de sisones comunes (Tetrax tetrax) a ver si estaban más cerca del camino para hacer unas fotos mejores.

And before we left we decided to go to where we had seen the largest flock of Little Bustards to see if they were closer to the road to take some better photos.

Que bonitos son.

How beautiful they are.

De repente el grupo alzó el vuelo y no volvió al sitio en donde estábamos. Aún no se que fue lo que vieron.

Suddenly the group took flight and did not return to the place where we were. I still don't know what they saw.

No pude fotografiar todos pero en una de las fotos conté 101 ejemplares.

I could not photograph all but in one of the photos I counted 101 Birds.

Es una pena el tremendo declive que esta especie está teniendo. Se estima que ha desaparecido ya un 75% de su población. Espero que pueda enseñar esta especie en libertad a mis nietos.

It is a pity the tremendous decline that this species is having. It is estimated that 75% of its population has disappeared. I hope I can show this species in freedom to my grandchildren.

La entrada de esta semana es sobre una visita al Valle del Tiétar a principios de noviembre que en esta época del año ya suele haber bastantes grullas comunes (Grus grus). Sin embargo, este año están llegando con bastante retraso y había muchas menos que en otros años.

This week's post is about a visit to the Tietar Valley at the beginning of November that at this time of the year there are usually many Common Cranes. However, this year they are arriving quite late and there were fewer than in other years.

El tiempo fue bueno aunque bastante calor para esta época del año.

The weather was good although quite hot for this time of year.

De camino hacia este Valle, hicimos una parada en un vertedero de residuos para ver y fotografiar a los buitres negros (Aegypius monachus) que suelen acudir a él bastantes. Como es lógico, había más buitres leonados (Gyps fulvus).

On the way to this Valley, we made a stop at a waste dump to see and photograph the Black Vultures that usually come to it quite a lot. Obviously, there were more Griffon Vultures.

Creo que llegamos un poco tarde pues los buitres ya no estaban comiendo y no vino ningún camión a descargar. En la foto un buitre leonado (Gyps fulvus) abandonando el vertedero.

I think we arrived a little late because the vultures were no longer eating and no truck came to unload. In the photo a Griffon Vulture leaving the waste dump.

Buitres negros (Aegypius monachus).

En esta fotografía podéis apreciar bastante bién que los buitres negros (Aegypius monachus) son más grandes que los buitres leonados (Gyps fulvus). Los buitres negros (Aegypius monachus) tienen una envergadura de 250-285 centímetros y una longitud de 100-115 centímetros mientras que los buitres leonados (Gyps fulvus) su envergadura es de 230-265 centímetros y una longitud de 95-110 centímetros.

In this picture you can see quite well that Black Vultures are larger than Griffon Vultures. Black Vultures have a wingspan of 250-285 centimeters and a length of 100-115 centimeters while Griffon Vultures their wingspan is 230-265 centimeters and a length of 95-110 centimeters.

Y las siguientes fotografías son de ambas especies que al ser tan distintas no hace falta que las comente.

And the following photographs are of both species that being so different it is not necessary to comment.

También había bastantes milanos reales (Milvus milvus).

There were also quite a few Red Kites.

Y también muchos cuervos grandes (Corvus corax).

And also many Common Ravens.

Un bando de palomas torcaces (Columba palumbus).

A flock of Common Wood Pigeons.

Pero las estrellas del día fueron las currucas. En la foto un macho de curruca cabecinegra (Sylvia melanocephala).

But the stars of the day were the warblers. In the photo a male Sardinian Warbler.

Y vimos varias currucas rabilargas (Sylvia undata). En las fotos los machos que son los que más me gustan y los que estuvieron más cooperadores.

And we saw several Dartford Warblers. In the photos males who are the one I like the most and those who were most cooperative.

Que bonitos son y difíciles de fotografiar.

How beautiful they are and difficult to photograph.

Parecía que era en día Interncional de los busardos ratoneros (Buteo buteo). Lo digo por la cantidad de ellos que vimos.

It seemed that it was the International day of the Common Buzzards. I say it because of the amount of them we saw.

Este en concreto estaba comiendo insectos en un prado.

This one in particular was eating insects in a meadow.

En una laguna que visitamos vimos, relativamente cerca, garza real (Ardea cinerea).

In a lagoon we visited we saw, relatively close, Grey Heron.

Agachadiza común (Gallinago gallinago).

Common Snipe.

Andarríos grande (Tringa ochropus).

Green Sandpiper.

Y esta hembra de aguilucho lagunero occidental (Circus aeruginosus).

And this female Eurasian Marsh Harrier.

En la laguna había varios grupos pequeños de grullas comunes (Grus grus) pero muy lejos y con la refracción no salieron bien las fotos. Sin embargo, esta pareja tuvo a bien salir de ella y posarse cerca de donde estábamos, eso sí, a contraluz.

In the lagoon there were several small flocks Common Cranes but far away and with the refraction the photos did not go well. However, this couple was good to leave it and landed near where we were,that yes, backlit.

Continuamos a la búsqueda de las grullas comunes (Grus grus) por las dehesas sin mucha suerte pues aunque vimos algunas estaban muy lejos y como ya os había dicho antes había muy pocas. En nuestro recorrido pudimos ver otras aves como este macho de roquero solitario (Monticola solitarius) en plumaje de invierno.

We continue to search for Common Cranes through the pastures without much luck because although we saw some they were very far and as I had told you before there were very few. On our tour we could see other Birds like this Blue Rock Thrush male in winter plumage.

Zorzal charlo (Turdus viscivorus).

Mistle Thrush.

Y a este cerdo cerdo ibérico que aunque no sea un ave también me gusta verles comiendo libres por los campos en busca de bellotas.

And this Iberian pig that although it is not a Bird I also like to watch them eating free in the fields in search of acorns.

Como no había casi grullas comunes (Grus grus), decidimos ir a a zona de siembra a ver que podíamos ver y fotografiar. En la foto un alcaudón real meridional (Lanius meridionalis).

As there were almost no Common Cranes we decided to go to the cropping area to see what we could see and photograph. In the photo a Southern Grey Shrike.

Que bonitos son.

How beautiful they are.

También vimos un par de grupos de gangas ortega (Pterocles orientalis).

We also saw a couple of flocks of Black-bellied Sandgrouses.

Escribano triguero (Miliaria calandra).

Corn Bunting.

Abubillas europeas (Upupa epops).

Eurasian Hoopoe.

Y bastantes avefrías europeas (Vanellus vanellus).

And many Northern Lapwings.

Me encantan los tonos irisados que tiene esta especie.

I love the flashy feathers that this species has.

Como podéis comprobar por las fotos, ya casi cuando no había luz vimos una pareja de águilas imperiales ibéricas (Aquila adalberti).

As you can see from the photos, almost when there was no light we saw a pair of  Spanish Imperial Eagles.

Una de ellas se posó en la parte de enmedio de una torre eléctrica.

One of them landed on the middle of an electrical pylon.

Y la otra estaba ya posada en su parte superior. Me imagino que pasarían allí la noche.

And the other was already perched on its top. I imagine they would spend the night there.
