CARROÑADA EN PICOS DE EUROPA. ¿QUIEN MATO AL CARNERO?

Hola a tod@s.
Hi everyone.

On a trip with clients to the National Park of Picos de Europa we were lucky to see this banquet carried out by a large group of Griffon Vultures and a mastiff which is supposedly the guardian of the sheep.

The truth is that when managed to see the cause of the concentration of Griffon Vultures the ram was already dead and a large mastiff was devouring him surrounded by a large number of patient vultures. We decided to wait until the dog finished eating to see how the vultures were thrown to the leftovers. As the dog was eating slowly the vultures concentration was increasing and at the end there were over 80 vultures around.

When I saw these Griffon Vultures perched still did not know how entertaining would be this moment and the pity is not to be sure that was the dog that killed the ram though in one of the photos you can see how the sheep had been attacked by its throat. My impression was that the dog was very hungry and decided to end with it but everyone can draw their own conclusions.

We got prepared to enjoy the moment from a distance without disturbing the mastiff nor the vultures.

In this photo you can appreciate the wounded throat of the ram.

When vultures approached the carcass too much the dog threw them unceremoniously.

After a while eating we thought the dog was thirsty and he went down to drink from a stream. The vultures took advantage of the moment and they launch on eating.

But he get back quickly to expel the vultures and continue eating.

Also approached to the feast an Egyptian Vulture. Seeing that there were too many Vultures and the dog attacks it decided to go away.

Una paciente espera.
A patient waiting.

Y algunos bocados más.
And some more snacks.

The dog refused to leave his food.

Otro momento de felicidad para los buitres.
Another moment of happiness for the vultures.

Y continuaban llegando más.
And some more kept coming.

And the last defense before giving up and leaving the rest for the birds.

In less than five minutes the vultures left clean the ram carcass.

I hope I did not bore you too much with this report but I found it quite instructive to show you that sometimes things are not as they would have us believe some people. Who killed the ram?
