Esta entrada va dedicada a un fin de semana que he pasado en compañía de unos estupendos clientes en tierras Extremeñas. El sábado les llevé a visitar el Parque Ornitológico de Arrocampo y después a los llanos de Cáceres para tener todo el domingo para visitar el Parque Nacional de Monfragüe.

This post is dedicated to a weekend I spent in the company of a great customer in Extremadura. On Saturday I took them to visit the Arrocampo Bird Park and then to the plains of Cáceres to have all Sunday to visit the National Park of Monfragüe.

El tiempo no pudo ser mejor y vimos 80 especies de aves. El paseo por los llanos de cáceres fué inolvidable acompañados por los cantos de los aláudidos y las observaciones de aves esteparias y como colofón un maravillosos atardecer.

The weather could not be better and we saw 80 species of birds. The walk through the plains of Caceres was accompanied by the unforgettable songs of the Aláudidos and observations of Steppe Birds and to round off a lovley sunset.

Como había tres niñas decidí parar a dar una vuelta cuando nos dirigíamos a Arrocampo para no hacer tan pesado el viaje y les dí una vuelta por unas dehesas muy bonitas. Mientras que paseábamos e íbamos conociéndonos tuvimos la inmensa suerte de contemplar este alimoche común (Neophron percnopterus) que era el primero que veía este año.

As there were three yong girls I decided to stop for a walk while we headed to Arrocampo for not doing so heavy the trip and I gave them a tour for some pretty dehesas. While we were walking and knowing each other we were very lucky to see this Egyptian Vulture which was the first I had seen this year.

Y enseguida se unió esta preciosa culebrera europea (Circaetus gallicus).

And soon it joined this beautiful Short-toed Eagle.

Una sorpresa y una pena. Cuando les iba comentando que por estas dehesas suelen verse bastantes grupos de grullas comunes (Grus grus) durante el invierno pudimos observar a estos tres inmaduros. Me imagino que como era ya el 15 de marzo no van a realizar la migración y su futuro es, cuando menos, incierto.

A surprise and a shame. When I was telling them that in winter these Dehesas are tipically lands of groups of Common Cranes we found these three immatures. I figure since it was already March 15th that these three birds will not migrate and their future is at least uncertain.

Después nos dirigimos a un antiguo lavadero a las afueras de un pueblo que me pareció interesante enseñar a las pequeñas como se lavaba la ropa antiguamente. Allí nos encontramos con este ejemplar de críalo europeo (Clamator glandarius) que también era el primero que veía en esta temporada.

Afterwards I drove to an old laundry just outside a village that I found interesting to show to the children how clothes were washed anciently. There we saw this specimen of Great Spotted Cuckoo who was also the first I had seen in this season.

En los charcos había golondrinas comunes (Hirundo rustica) y aviones comunes (Delichon urbica) recogiendo barro para sus nidos. En la foto golondrinas comunes.

In the puddles were some Barn Swallow and House Martin collecting mud for their nests. In the foto Barn Swallows.

Y bastantes ejemplares de rana común (Pelophylax perezi).

And quite a few specimens of Iberian Water Frogs.

Ya en Arrocampo vimos esta otra culebrera europea (Circaetus gallicus) que llevaba como la cola de una serpiente en el pico.

Already at Arrocampo we saw this other Short-toed Eagle wearing like the tail of a snake in its beak.

Y a algunos gorriones morunos (Passer hispaniolensis).

And some Spanish Sparrows.

En la zona de los observatorios vimos a esta gallineta de agua (Gallinula chloropus).

In the area of the observatories we saw this Moorhen.

En una semana se notaba que habían llegado más aguiluchos laguneros occidentales (Circus aeruginosus). En la foto una hembra adulta.

In a week you could tell they had come more Eurasian Marsh Harriers. In the photo an adult female.

Y como les había prometido pudimos observar bastantes calamones comunes (Porphyrio porphyrio).

And as I promised we could observe some Purple Swamp-hens.

Y a este gavilán común (Accipiter nisus).

And this Eurasian Sparrowhawk.

Después de comer fuimos a los llanos de Cáceres y vimos esta colonia de cigüeñas blancas (Ciconia ciconia).

After lunch we went to the plains of Cáceres and we saw this colony of White Storks.

Este buitre negro (Aegypius monachus) estaba tranquilamente posado muy cerca de una oveja con su cordero y se notaba que había parido no hacía mucho tiempo. Me imagine que se había comido su placenta.

This Monk Vulture was calmly landed close to a sheep with her ​​lamb and youI could tell she had given birth not long ago. I guess it had eaten its placenta.

Luego nos dimos un inolvidable paseo por los llanos de Cáceres. Durante el recorrido pudimos ver bastantes aves esteparias como este grupo de gangas ibéricas (Pterocles alchata). También varios grupos de gangas ortegas (Pterocles orientalis) a las que no pude fotografiar.

Then we make an unforgettable walk through the plains of Caceres. During the tour we saw many Steppe Birds as this group of Pin-tailed Sandgrouses. Also several groups of Black-bellied Sandgrouses to which I could not photograph.

También pudimos ver algunos sisones comunes (Tetrax tetrax) aunque como íbamos paseando a bastante distancia.

We could also see some Little Bustards but as we were walking at a long distance.

Durante todo el recorrido los trigueros (Miliaria calandra) y algunos aláudidos nos acompañaron y entretuvieron con sus cantos, sobre todo las calandrias (Melanocorypha calandra). En la foto un triguero.

Throughout the tour some Corn Buntings and some Larks accompanied and entertained us with their songs, especially Calandra Larks. In the photo a Corn Bunting.

Ya de regreso a la furgoneta vimos a este grupo de chorlitos dorados europeos (Pluvialis apricaria).

On the way back to the van we saw this group of European Golden Plovers.

Al día siguiente nos centramos en los distintos observatorios del Parque Nacional de Monfragüe e hicimos una visita al Castillo de Monfragüe para divisar el entorno del bosque mediterráneo que lo puebla. Mientras esperaba a los clientes las cogujadas comunes ya estaban marcando sus territorios.

The next day we focus on the different observatories of Montfrague National Park and we made a visit to the Castillo de Monfragüe to spot the environment of the Mediterranean Forest of the Park. While waiting to customers Crested Larks were already marking their territories.

Un grupo de estorninos negros (Sturnus unicolor).

Los verdecillos (Serinus serinus) no paraban de cantar.

Serins did not stop singing.

Y algunos buitres negros (Aegypius monachus) pasaron cerca nuestro.

And some Monk Vultures passed close to us.

La concentración de buitres leonados (Gyps fulvus) era abundante.

The concentration of Griffon Vulture was abundant.

También había algunos pinzones vulgares (Fringilla coelebs). En la foto una hembra.

There were also some Chaffinches. In the photo a female.

Despues de visitar el Castillo bajamos al observatorio del Salto del Gitano. Buitres leonados (Gyps fulvus).

After visiting the Castle we went down to the Salto del Gitano observatory. Griffon Vultures.

Y pudimos ver algunos milanos negros (Milvus migrans).

And we could see some Black Kites.

Y también algunas chovas piquirojas (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax).

And also some Red-billed Choughs.

Lo más destacable fueron las cigüeñas negras (Ciconia nigra). Había 4 parejas en los cantiles.

Most notable were the Black Storks. There were 4 couples in the cliffs.

Buitre leonado (Gyps fulvus).

Muchos pollos de buitre leonado (Gyps fulvus) ya habían nacido y se podía ver como los cebaban.

Many chickens of griffon vulture had been born and you could see how they feed them.

También estaban cantando los roqueros solitarios (Monticola solitarius).

They were also singing the Blue Rock Thrush.

Hembra de colirrojo tizón (Phoenicurus ochruros).

Había bastantes aviones roqueros (Ptyonoprogne rupestris).

There were quite a few Crag Martins.

Esta pareja de cigüenas negras (Ciconia nigra) nos sorprendieron con una cópula.

This pair of Black Storks surprised us with a copula.

Mientras comíamos esta joven hembra de zorro común (Vulpes vulpes) andaba en busca de alimento entre las mesas del merendero.

While we were having lunch this young female of Red Fox was looking for food among the picnic tables.

Y algunos rabilargos ibéricos (Cyanopica cookii) merodeaban por los alrededores aunque muy escondidos.

And some Azure-winged Magpie were prowling around though very hidden.

Y como final de la excursión nos dirigimos a la zona de Las Portillas del Tietar. En la foto un milano negro (Milvus migrans).

And as end of the tour we headed to the area of Las Portillas del Tietar. The photo shows a Black Kite.

Una golondrina daúrica (Hirundo daurica) estaba ya reconstruyendo su nido.

A Red-rumped Swallow was already rebuilding its nest.

Y también pudimos observar algunos cormoranes grandes (Phalacrocorax carbo) pescando.

And we also saw some Great Cormorants fishing.

Pero sin duda la estrella de este observatorio fue localizar este búho real (Bubo bubo) incubando. Los riscos estaban llenos de agujeros donde hacer el nido y eligen un sitio descubierto. La naturaleza es así.

But definitely the star of this observatory was to find this Eagle Owl incubating. Cliffs were full of holes where to make a nest and they choose an uncovered place. Nature is like this.

Esta foto fue tomada desde el observatorio a gran distancia con un teleobjetivo de 1.200mm. y ha sido ampliada para que se pueda ver el búho. En ningún momento fue molestada el ave.

This photo was taken from the observatory at a great distance with a telephoto lens of 1200mm. and has been extended so that you can see the owl. At no time was disturbed the Bird.

Aunque oímos en varias ocasiones a un águila imperial ibérica (Aquila adalberti) desde el observatorio no pudimos ver ninguna. Cuando ya habíamos decidido volvernos a Madrid empezaron a llegar culebreras europeas (Circaetus gallicus). En total había tres sobrevolando la zona. 

Although we repeatedly hear a Spanish Imperial Eagle from the observatory we could not see any. When we had decided to return to Madrid began arriving Short-toed Eagles. In total there were three flying over the area.

Y también dos alimoches comunes (Neophron percnopterus).

And also two Egyptian Vultures.

Y de despedida en nuestro regreso pudimos ver a un elanio común (Elanus caeruleus) que nos pasó muy cerca de la furgoneta pero como iba conduciendo no pude sacarle una foto pero nos gustó mucho poder verle.

And as goodbye of the trip, on our way back we saw a Black-shouldered Kite that passed very close to the van but as I was driving I could not take a photo but we really enjoyed to see it.
